I know you all have your favorite canned songs to dance to, but what if you could request a band to learn a song for you to dance to--what would that song be? Mind you all--I'm sort of asking for suggestions of songs to cover for my "band"
(we're a cello/mandolin/vocal duo sometimes accompanied by a very accomplished darabuka player). Here's what we currently do (other than the original music we've written for belly dancers, of course): Daler Menhdi's Tunak Tunak Tarkan's Şımarık Shakira's Ojos Así Raquy and the Cavemen's Dust (and we cover their version of the Bulgarian dance tune, "Graovsko"--though it's not technically a cover) |

awesome!! Yeah, list as many as you want to--we still have so much to learn!!
I was talking to the bazouki player of a Greek band that was playing at the Kreek festival in Louisville, KY--he shared his early stories--how people would shout out requests for songs that he just didn't know. His Greek band has been playing now for about 10 years, and I asked him about how many Greek songs did they know. He paused for a second, and then said, "probably a few hundred" I would like for us to get to that point--and would love to be able to just play practically any of the older (as well as the newer) standards for belly dancers. Thanks for all the suggestions--I'll start looking into those, and see where they overlap things we have in the que--and keep them coming! ![]() |

Ok then, here is a fat list to add to what I mentioned earlier, a lot of this is off a song list of a band that works with dancers from all over once a year and so puts together a 'standards' type of song list...
Saba Samir Hani El Henna Samra Samra Rompi Rompi Hadhihi Laylati Hebina Ya Sitti Ya Khityarah Lamma Badda Raks Al Badu Gatalouni Fatet Ganbina Hawaneem Ishkahador Shishkele Leyla Yesilim Soode Soode Esmerim Al Meya Shashkin Capkin Capkin a chifti improvisation Intra Omri Cleopatra Azi Zam |

These are already on our list of things to learn (suggestions by other dancers at various times): And for this I've been listening to tons of Kemani Cemal Çinareli and Turkish Rom so I can get the violin style on the cello--the problem is getting Robert to be able to do a chiftitelli rhythm consistently and convincingly on mandolin when we don't have our darabuka player with us. :p |
