Yes Lydia. We should call her Um Masr. She really was the lady of Arab song. She did, however get married later in her life. She married a doctor and remained with him until she died in 75.
It is extremely bad form to dance while she is singing. The audience will literally revolt and either shout or actually walk out. No one really tries to sing her songs. There are many great instrumental tributes to her. My favorite is done by the Zamelek Orchestra. There is a great story about her: At this time, Egypt was still controlled by the British and She developed a thyroid condition which was causing her to go blind. No doctor in Egypt would operate for fear it would damage her voice. Umm Kulthum was forced to go to the UK for surgery and after she arrived, a decision was handed down that no surgeon in the UK was to touch her. The quote was" The Egyptians may tolerate our control of their country, but the whole country would rise up in arms were we to destroy Umm Kulthum's voice. " |

As far as I know (if someone knows for sure, please correct me), until Soheir Zaki danced to Om Kalthoum's music, no dancer had ever performed live to anything which had been sung by Om Kalthoum, not even "just the music". Also as far as I know, Soheir danced to a musical arrangement of am Om Kalthoum song (Inta Omri?), not while Om Kalthoum sang.
The performance by a dancer while Om Kalthoum sings in a movie would be an exception and was most likely acceptable because of the context of the scene in the movie and the part Om Kalthoum was playing. |

Nancy Ajram has actually covered some of her songs. And there is a music video featuring her doing so on You Tube. She was very respectful and did lovely job.
