Default Why you must know your music

Yesterday i remembered this funny story that i have to tell you..When i just started oriental dancing i was like so many of you and did not know much about the correct music...also i did not speak any arabic yet,...so i heard a piece of music that i realy like just instrumental and i loved it..i heard it in Belgium in a Morocan coffeeshop and ask the owner for a copy and he gave me...so a year after that i travel to Baghdad for a contract and i used that nice music for my veilwork...i noticed that people gave me biiiig smiles specialy when i was doing my veilwork so i was very happy !! what i did not know was that that piece of music was and i believe still is ...the music played on saoudy national tv every day for the opening of the news !! as you know in Saoudy dancing is strickly forbidden, So instade of having people dreaming away on oum khaltoum music ..i hade them ,,dreaming ,, away to the Saoudy news and culture in my bellydance outfit....I only found out much later when someone told me ,,i love that music i use to hear it everyday when the news start when i use to live in Saoudy....Have a nice day Lydia

It is fun, and a good story to show that even purely instrumental music can be tricky at times.

You was lucky Lydia (and its funny anyway lol)

I had the unfortunate luck to be at a prestigious show 2-3 years ago in Athens, and there is a dancer doing floor work, with the most skimby costume dancing to a wonderfull slow music that was a muslim prayer!!!
Was with arabs at the same table and they felt so insulted and discusted by the dancer AND her teacher that gave her the piece.

So yes, we got to KNOW our music

Actually, my first teacher...ehm, I mean "teacher", did the same thing once...ok, so she doesn`t speak arabic, but I think that "allah akbar" in the song says it all...she says she`s a dancer, so she should have know better...after that, I never returned to her studio again.
