geez...this reminds me of something that happened earlier this year. when i was still dancing at the studio with my old company my instructor had this young student - only 15 who was a representative for the global young leaders conference. The girl was asked to dance as part of her presentation so she came to learn a choreography.
My instructor taught her for the first 8 classes or so and then passed her to me to drill her. When i heard the song for her veil choreography i was troubled because i knew that i was familiar with it for some reason but i still couldn't place it. One day i had it playing while my cousins were visiting and one of them said - "ummmm...you know that's the call to prayer right?". It occurred to me then where i knew it from. The radio station that they listen to at my cousin's house plays the call to prayer at the appropriate time during the day, so i'm quite used to hearing it! i was mortified. i called my instructor immediately and her attitude was "well...it's not like she's doing anything obscene to it". I was like ![]() ![]() ![]() The girl had already gone abroad and we couldn't even contact her. I was so upset and worried about her offending anyone or anyone embarrassing her during or after her performance - such a young girl, just innocently dancing! My instructor found the song on one of the sound tracks to El Clon and as usual, never bothers to research the origins and connotations of the music. Oh the perils of ignorance! |
