Default BD music on iTunes?

Hello all,

I just got a $25 gift certificate to iTunes, and am looking to spend all of it on Belly dance music(of course!). I'm looking for mostly Egyptian/Lebanese/Am Cab classical music. So far I have my eye on "Jalilah's Raks Sharki 1: Classic Egyptian Dance Music". Has anyone heard that album? I was also thinking I should get myself some more George Abdo. What have you guys gotten on iTunes and liked?

I've been a long time iTunes store user, and am happy to see that they have *some* bellydance music now. I think for a while they just had Veena and Neena...

Jahlilah's Raks Sharqi 6 "In a Beirut Mood" is also really good, I especially like the song Al Houriyah (the fairy).

If you search for specific composers you'll find a lot of things that won't come up in a general belly dance/bellydance search; also try alternate spellings for songs as there are several songs I found that way.

Have fun!

Hi!

I bought the Aziza Raks! CD and think it's been one of my best buys on iTunes for some time. The wash ya wash albums are also worth having in the collection.

If you want pop music, I also recently discovered the 'musicana' series on iTunes.

I've had to put an embargo on buying any more music: I have nearly 10GB of arabic music, some of which I've never even listened to! It's a bit of an addiction I have, I need to get it under control

Eshta - Wow, and I thought my 5 GB was impressive. I'm jealous of your collection - where did you get it all from? I have Wash Ya Wash 1 and love it. What volumes of Wash Ya Wash are good?

Suhad - I like Jahlilah's music series, I'm going to listen to the Beirut mood sound clips.

LOL, give it time, you'll soon be upgrading hard drives just to store your precious collection!!

I collect more music at every given moment - if people go to Egypt I ask them in forceful tones to bring me back some music, I do swapsies with fellow dancers, I browse through iTunes a lot, if a workshop has a CD worth buying, I'll buy one...suddenly you realise there's more music than you ever realised!

I don't have wash ya wash 1, but I have 2 - 6, and my personal favourite is 2, although there are a couple of tracks that you'll find on the BDSS albums. 3 is pretty good, and if you have enough change, buy the first track on 4: Layalina.

I think it depends for what purpose you intend the music - some music is great to perform to, some to practice to, some to just listen to... I would put the wash ya wash albums in the perform/listen to category.

I have the Jalilah albums 3 & 6. I confess to not listening to 6 much, although there are a couple of tracks that are pretty much instrumental solos the whole way through which would be useful for practicing improvisation to. There are 2 long tracks that would be great for performing although most likely you'll want to hack them down to a shorter duration!

Eshta,
I just got myself a 120 gig hard drive because my music collection was large enough that I could no longer defragment my puny 60 gig built in hard drive. Having an external hard drive makes it a lot easier to swap music with friends! Thanks for the advice. It's too bad we are so geographically far, or we could easily swap a lot of music.

No, it's probably not a bad thing we're too far apart to swap music - if I had another 5GB of music to listen to, it would be even harder for me to tear myself away to my day job

Let us know what you decide to buy!!

So far, I've gotten:
Wash Ya Wash 4 - Layalina
Wash Ya Wash 2 - Banat Baharei, Raks Bedeya, Baiyaa Elhawa, and Tamr Henna

And because the CD is from my home city and it's good:
Drum Attack - Tony Chamoun - Nourhan, Shadia

I still have $18.07 left to spend! I'm starting to really eye the Jalilah In a Beirut Mood album... Any more recommendations?

I know I'm late, but here is my 2 sents.

For Egyptian taste:
Jalilah 1 and 2 (those are the best)
Wash Ya Wash 1 and 2 (those are the best)

I tried to find more from my must have collection, but the albums weren't there. Sorry.

I quite like Jahlilas "in a beirut mood". There's a long track with more folkloristic songs adapted to dance and performance which I really like. there are some nay and qanun tracks which I find a bit slow and boring but someone else might love them.
