Dear Aya,
What great footage!! I have been fortunate enough to see Saudis do Ardah with swords once when I was in the same performance with them. It was really wonderful. These guys look like they are doing the UAE version of Ardah but I am not sure if they call the dance the same thing. I once asked a guy from Abu Dhabi about Emirati men's dance and his reply was "We do crazy dancing"...(???) Hugs to you, A'isha |

To be honest, I don't find this kind of dance fun at all, especially in the recent context of the expansion of Islamic fundamentalism.
O.k., maybe this dance was fun for the kids, but the video with the grown ups dancing this way, was rather scary to me. Especially the guys with the black cloths, didn't look at all as if they have been dancing just for fun. Don't forget, that dance has also served as a preparation for war in many cultures. I would like very much to know what the songs are talking about, because I cannot get rid of the suspicion, that they are talking about war.

O.k., o.k. you convinced me
Thank you both Tarik Sultan and Lydia, that you calmed me down and took my suspicions out of my mind Well, I suppose I got nervous, because in Germany where I live, people don't consider it to be very funny when somebody handles around with guns. They are very careful with martialism and violence, especially because of their recent past (Hitler etc). Well, there's nothing wrong with it, but sometimes one can be too careful.By the way Tarik, of course I was not talking about Bush's war dance in the White House:p . But there are indeed war dances in many cultures, even in Greece. Our ancient Greek war dance was called "pyrichios" (which means "fire dance") and there is a modern adaption of it among the Pontioi dances (Pontioi= Greeks who came from Asia minor, from the Black Sea). And I can assure you, that dancing with certain kinds of music can really make you more aggressive and fearless than you usually are (maybe you have made such an experience yourself). War dances are very ecstatic. You find many of them in Africa, Asia and also among the native Americans. And I'm not talking about the symbolical war dances like sword and cane dances (which you find not only in Oriental Dance). I'm talking about ecstatic dances, whoses purpose is to make the warrior fearless and brave. But anyway, I believe you that those guys from the Emirates were dancing just for fun.

I love to watch this kind of dancing myself !! and I like the way that they use guns - they are just keeping up with the times right !!?
However Chryssanthia is right in that there are many tribes/nations who dance before they go to fight. I see your point Chryssanthia....but this is fine, honest xx (I suppose it's like them morris dancers here in england - they dance with long sticks. - although they do have those stupid bells on their legs which tends to de-toughen them !) |
