Dear Brea, So far it seems you have only interviewed men for this magazine. Is this trend going to continue? If so, may I ask why you do not interview women? Regards, A'isha Last edited by Aisha Azar; 07-02-2008 at 07:46 PM. |

Hi A'isha- because it's my particular job to spotlight one male dancer every month. Before that there were no male dancers and my editor thought it would be fun to have an interview a month with a male dancer as well. Malia and others interview the female dancers. Last month was Ava Fleming. You can see it in the archives.

Dear Brea, Thank you for your response. Since there is a belief that male dancers are rare, what will you do when you have interviewed them all? Will you be put of a job? My personal belief is that they are not rare at all and you will be in business for a long, long time! (LOL) Regards, A'isha |

Perhaps you misunderstood me. I meant 'there were no male dancers featured in the magazine'. I don't think I will run out of people to interview, no.

I am hoping that I don't get another raft of dirt for pointing this out, but does it not seem like they could be interviewed just like women are in an egalitarian ratio, and not have a special interview every month just because they are men? This seems once again to be an example of preferential treatment for males only. I am not looking for trouble. I only want to bring this to your attention, the magazine owners' attention, and the attention of all people who do not think men are getting a fair shake, when in fact, being men gets them special privileges and attention. I will not bother you any more about it because I really am not trying to harass you, even though it might be taken out of context that way. I just feel that it needs to be pointed out just how often and how much we are treating men in special ways. With respect and regards, A'isha |

Well, *sniff*, Jim Boz got his picture on the COVER - and *I* didn't. I'm *so* hurt and have OBVIOUSLY been discriminated against!

Dear Zorba,
Go ahead and make light of it if you want. But this thing with preferential treatment for males is a creeping and insidious problem that people are not paying enough attention to. I just want us all to look at it before its too late and yet another layer of BS has buried the dance. Regards, A'isha |

A'isha:
I do understand your concern, believe me. As an equalist, 'equal' is my personal goal, not 'special'. I was trying to point out that they are even. Last month Ava Fleming was on the cover. Generally in each (though apparently not this one, I just reviewed it again) there is an interview with one female and one male bellydancer. If you look at the archives it should be apparent that there is one of each featured in each magazine, generally speaking. Jim's was the first front-cover male one, all the rest have been women. I'll go through the past issues and post the featured dancers here so you can see what I mean. May: Cover Ava Fleming. Male Dancer: Mark Balahadia. April: Cover Renee. DVD review and Mahira's account of dance. Male Dancer: Zorba. March: Cover Jale. Jale's dance journey article. Male dancer: Tarik Sultan. February: Cover Valerie Mirag. Interview with Valerie Mirag. Male dancer: Frank Farinaro. Prior to this, all interviews were with female dancers. This is the 2-year anniversary of our magazine. (poor Zorba! Still, yours was very colorful and beautiful!)

Dear Brea, My point was that there are much fewer male dancers than female, and yet they are featured EVERY MONTH. That is not equitable. There are probably 10 times as many females dancers as male at the very least, so egalitarian interview numbers would reflect that. To give men interviews every month seems excessive because there are so many more women than men. This kind of thing has just become a concern lately, as I notice more and more special treatment for men. This is only my business in the very broadest sense, but maybe that inequity can be brought to the attention of the owner/editor. Of course, she/ he may just think I am out in left field, as so many do at this stage of the situation.... BTW, your articles are well thought out and definitely informative on many levels as you allow people to give their own responses without rewording every darn thing they utter. It's refreshing. Regards, A'isha |
