Hi Zorba,

No, I have not. I will look into it. I'd hate to think I can't do something so simple just because of sound sensitivity.

Amen, A'isha! The UK's International Belly Dance Congress website now has a short video clip compilation on the front page - it features JimBoz being patted on the backside, on stage, by one of the organisers -
Can you imagine the reaction if someone did that to a female dancer?!

Oh, THAT'S just lovely - NOT. That shouldn't have happened in the first place, and sure as **** shouldn't be posted on someone's website!

Saroyan has sound samples on his site...

I once took classes from Jim Boz. How strange...I can't believe that people do that kind of thing. He's a good teacher.

Zorba-

I listened to the Grecian ones. Owww. There's just something about that SOUND that I can't deal with. See...it's OK if they are clacking and not ringing. I don't know if I'll ever be able to get over that sound problem. Maybe I can just bang two tiny wooden blocks together.

Brea, you may never get over the problem with sensitivity but how about earplugs of some sort while you use them or when practicing put some sort of sock over your hand to help muffle the sounds. Then during performance, use the zils on one or two numbers and then move on to things without them. Just a suggestion as these are things I do to tolerate zils.

Hi teela-

You have this problem too? Oh yay! I am not the only one! I always thought it was just me.

I will try doing it that way; perhaps I will finally be able to stand them. Thanks!

BTW Brea playing zills is not simple. Really good zill players can get a lot of different qualities and also degrees of loudness/quietness also ringy/mellow out of them. Even like tinkling crystal. But that's very few! It takes a lot of practice. I can barely play the two starting rhythms while walking slowly.

And opinions vary on the question of whether zill playing is mostly beledi vs. an integral part of raks sharki.
