Too many people erroneously think an ability to do weird things with their midsection constitutes belly dance.

I agree with Aisha about the overblown movements. It's a trend that is so apparent amongst many dancers of different genres - it becomes about the tricks you can do rather than the dance. I think it is sad, and very limiting because the dance ceases to be about the music and becomes about you, and how great you are.

The motto I tell myself is that it is not what moves you can do, but how you do them that matters. You might be able to do the most earth-shattering shimmy in the world (or do ten backflips, whatever), but maybe the music calls for a tiny little controlled shimmy...and that's where the magic is.

It's a shame that there is this trend amongst dancers.

But I guess it's not just amongst dancers. How many teenage girls have you seen that felt they had to wear the tightest jeans, the most makeup, the skimpiest clothing in order to be 'hot' and get noticed?

I agree he's a contortionist, not an oriental dancer and that he had better watch out for posture problems.

What I wonder is--why is he choosing to perform his amazing contortions within this context? Does he think or himself as an oriental dancer or did he just decide he thinks he will get the most exposure/earn the most income this way? I would agree that he would be better off in the circus but it would have to be a small venue. The audience couldn't side one-sided rib isolations or the tiny abdomen flutters from the huge stadiums where the big circuses I've seen are held.

He's just looking for how to make a splash. Cathy

Apart from the ribs sticking out against the skin, this guy is great! If I'm not mistaken I've come across this person on Hi5. He's Turkish isn't he?

Well, I can only say: how I wish I were that flexible!

I know... I am not that skinny (anymore)..... but I am soooo sick of people thinking it is ok to make comments on skinny people.... do we go up to a fat person & take away their doughnut?????
NO because that is considered rude....
but how is it different....??? thinking it is ok to comment on skinny bodies... I know many "skinny" people who eat a ton..... & some chubbies who hardly eat at all.....
(& yes I know some fat people who gorge & some skinny people w/ anorexia..but most I have observed are somewhat "normal" w/ their eating habits)....
ok rant over... whew.....

I use to be as skinny as he was but I discovered the joys of meat Seriously, everyone thought I had some kind of eat disorder accept I ate more than my weight proportionally. But my metabolism has slowed a bit and now I'm a healthy skinny

This guy is a "Zenne" by the way. A lot of Zenne wear pretty heavy make-up and dance in pseudo or full on drag. I think he's amazing in his own way but I'd rather watch Didem perform Roman Havasi any day!

Anyone whose appearance is out of the ordinary draws comments, whether they are blindingly beautiful or particularly thin or have carrot red hair. We're taught as children (at least I was) that personal comments of any kind are rude, but people seem to forget that over the years. There is something about extremely thin people that seems to arouse concern: you are so thin! Eat, be healthier! People who are heavy tend to draw contempt instead: get a grip on yourself, don't be a pig. Society's definition of normal as far as appearance is concerned is very narrow, which leads to discrimination in fields like dance, alas.
