My wife has been talking about this for years, but has never followed through with actualy learning. I have been trying to get her interested in things that I do (martial arts, sword fighting, paintball, theater, etc) just so we could spend time together, but she never clicked with any of these things. One day I was looking for a belly dance school for her and came across Zorba's web site (Thanks Zorba) and thought since I can't get her to do something I'm interested in I'll do something she's interested in.

Also, I have always enjoyed going against the grain and doing things the "mainstream" may think strange (which is strange in and of its self because I am actually very mainstream and conservative in the day to day). Anyway, now we are both stoked about getting started.

We are the male belly dancers, gayest of the gay, whether or not we are really gay. Wrap your mind around that!

Dear Zardoz,
It's nice, honest motivation. I hope it works out well!

A'isha

Hey Zardoz, martial arts and belly dance don't exclude each other. I am such a "martial" woman, I've been exercising different martial arts for about 10 years and I would have loved to go on, but I cannot afford any more injuries because I am a professional dancer and instructor. I had got a bad injury at the shoulder some years ago during the Ninjutsu training, which took quite some time until it healed and I cannot risk something like this anymore. By the way, one of the male students I had was also a martial artist
If your wife is also dancing belly dance, you could dance together and maybe become the new belly dance dream couple (like Horacio and Beata Cifuentes). So buddy, go on and don't worry about what people say.

Its more fun swimming upstream, isn't it? But its not really strange because you consider yourself mainstream - you're looking for an outlet. I wouldn't call myself exactly mainstream, but I *am* very conservative in most respects!

It is very hard to question the masculinity of male salmon who swim upstream- why should human males fighting their way upstream be any more questionable?

Actually, I think martial arts background for a new dancer would be an advantage in terms of flexibility, understanding of how one's body works, and self-discipline.

Also, with a martial arts background, you can chop socky any knuckle dragging bully who has an issue with your masculinity as a male belly dancer. He won't even see it coming, thinking you're just a sissy.

Rico is right, this could be a clever scheme to give your martial arts background some real-world exposure!

Just remember to incorporate it in your dance nicely: after you've high-kicked your detractor do a nice up-to-down undulation, and then pivot-turn to the next victim . And don't forget to smile!

Yes Sharif has the plan. I would only add head slides with temple arms, to mesmerize the bully before you dispatch him!

The whole gay thing and Belly dance is a bit confusing. I have my personal choices and tastes when it comes to watching a Male dancer . But I just cant get the theory why your sexuality should be in question whether you doing Belly dancing or pole dancing or whatever dance you do. Also I have found its the gay guys who is more worried about their sexuality than straight guys. To every gay guys who want to hide their sexuality please get a girl friend or wife. Believe me its easier and no body will ask you a question. And if you manage to get somebody like Nicole Kidman or Liza Menneli , Well you scored a good one.
