you may know this already, but the CD 'Best of Saidi" does not actually have any Saidi music on it. it is all classic Balady and OUm Kalthoum. there is a Dina video with Fatme Serhan where most of this music is used. Marya |

Dear Marya, I think Saidi has many different meanings to Egyptians. Sometimes Mark Basyouni ( Manal's husband) calls his style of dance Saidi when it is not what we think of as Saidi here in the west. We would classify him as shaabi. Fifi Abdou has clear definitions for what she thinks of as Saidi or Beledi, so it is hard to figure out sometimes. Regards, A'isha |

Are you sure it was her? I was there and Dina's singer truly sounded like Fatme Serhan. However, her singing in public at an entertainment venue would seem to be a reversal of her decision after going on the hajj to retire from being an entertainer singer. Just wondering if she might be returning to the stage. It certainly wouldn't be the first time an entertainer has returned to the stage after a hajj-inspired retirement.

Dear Marya, I have a video on which Fifi asks the audience if they want to see her perform Beledi or Saidi. She makes it clear that they are two different dances in her mind and she assumes the audience knows the difference, too, according to Katy Azar, who translated for me. I have seen her do various Beledi dances with cane and cymbals and they are all fun and flirtatious and rather upbeat in their pace. This was true when she was teaching it and when she was dancing it in Texas as well. I have not seen her do so much Saidi, but maybe once or twice on video. I am not so clear on what she defines as Saidi, but she definitely sees it as a different dance than Beledi, which was the point I was trying to make, and that she sees these dances as separate from belly dance. Regards, A'isha |

You and I met at Alfey Bey's, and then went on to the ahwa next to the mosque behind the Khan, remember? With Rocky. We stopped for tea? You were with Lennie. That was one of my very favorite evenings in Cairo! Anyway, I got a chill when she started with "lah-ley-lee-lah laaaaa--eeey" which is exactly how Fatme Serhan starts it on the album, and then I was quite sure it was she when she got to "Tatihl Shibak" In other words it sounded just like her to me, and if you noticed, Dina made a point of acknowledging her and having her bow just as much as Dina herself bowed, which is something none of the other singers got that night. This plus the fact that Dina has done videos with her before? Also, I asked Rocky afterwards and she confirmed that it had to be Fatme Serhan. So I don't have positive proof but I myself am convinced. If not her it was someone doing a very good imitation. Just my opinion. Maybe you could ask Raqia? It was one of the high points of my stay in Cairo this year. I had the same feeling when Dina's singer started the "ya layli" and then the mawal leading into Taht el Shebbak - sounded just like Fatme's recording and how I remember hearing her when she performed it with Dina a few years ago. If Rocky thinks she was Fatme, then probably it really was her! I'm not yet totally convinced, though, knowing how seriously the post-hajj pledge to stop doing something is taken by those who make such pledges. OTOH, people do reverse their decisions and return to public life. As you say, if it wasn't her, it was someone who does a wonderful imitation of her. If it was her, I'm really happy that she may come out of retirement. ![]() |

Yes this is the one I mean. I don't speak Arabic so if you know how Dina introduced her, I would be interested to know who it was if not Fatme Serhan! Hi Leyla, Yes those two nights (opening gala and night of Alfey Bey and ahwa with you and others) were two of the highlights of my trip as well! Best wishes, Cathy |
