Dear A'isha, thanks! I've been listening to these songs a lot lately and I think I know now which part is the mawwal. Thank you!

Default Fatme Serhan is awesome!

I just got this CD and also *love* it. A'isha--thanks for the descriptions of the lyrics.

Can anyone tell me more about Fatme Serhan and which other CDs of hers I should get? Best of Saidi?

What style of music should she be described as? I suppose the album title should give a clue--baladi, and I know this means "hometown" but do I take that to mean "popular, local village music" as in modern-day folkloric? I don't think it's shaabi, which is urban right?

Can anyone tell me about Fatme Serhan herself? Where does she live, does she tour, etc. I can't find a website for her per se. I think I heard she was in Negwa Fouad's band at one point?

Dear Cathy,
I can tell you that Fatme Sirhan sings in beledi ( country) style. The word literally translates as "country", but also has other contexts, I think. She seems to sing for many different dancers for parts of their shows. She sings for Dina on Best of Saidi, which has one of my favorite sharghi routines. I will
try to find out more about her if I can. ( I wish I had read my emails yesterday before I left the house. In the afternoon I went to an Egyptian friend's house for a visit and could have asked her and her husband....)
Regards,
A'isha

Default Fatme Sirhan

Dear Cathy,
I called a friend of mine from Egypt last night and she really did not know very much more than I do about Fatme Sirhan, other than that she "sings behind" Dina and some other dancers.
I'm sorry I could not get more info for you.
Regards,
A'isha

Dea A'isha,

Thanks anyway, that was very nice of you!

Totally unrelate but I saw a great concert last night--From Bukhara to Cairo. several different musicians and groups. The whole second half was Simon Shaheen and his Near Eastern Ensemble, fairly traditional takht style and very good. (Plus he is wicked handsome). The first half was a wild mix including an unaccompanied nay/mizmar player, then Richard Hagopian who plays Armenian oud with his son on kanoun and frame drum accompaniment, then this totally wild group from Bukhara--a kind of mix of Jewish klezmer, Arab, and Persian from Central Asia! Beautiful costumes, three singers, and a dancer who did 3 costume changes in 20 minutes (!) and seemed mostly Persian in style from my limited knowledge of 3 weekend seminars in Persian. Cathy

Dear Cathy, thanks for the questions about Fatme. I'm waiting for them to be answered as well as I love Fatme and just cannot not-listen to her music. I've seen video footage of her singing for Dina I think. Best of Saidi album is also wonderful. If you can get it you should. This concert you've seen sounds amazing, do you happen to know if it tours internationally?

Dear A'isha, thanks so much for the effort, that was indeed really nice of you! You've been a great help already. If you do find out more about Fatme, will you please let us know?

Thanks ladies!

She used to sing for Dina and others. Within the last few years, she went to Mecca for the Hajj. When she returned to Cairo, she officially retired from singing in public and recording - boohooboohooboohoo very sad about this! As far as I know, only Hollywood Music Center has CDs for her. If you go to Hollywood Music Center and search on "Fatme Serhan" you'll see 4 which feature her. We can hope that she will eventually change her mind and start singing again and that maybe someone will make new recordings, but it doesn't look too likely.

Default Ala Warag Il Fool lyrics

Hello

Well, from what I see there are only ladies posting, so please excuse my meddling, but I have too become inloved with fatme serhan voice. Ala Warag is one of my favorite songs, and browsing the net I've managed to found the lyrics and translation. Hope it helps.

ala warag el fol dala'ny : On tha jasmine leaves pamper me
Ana mahmalsh el zol dah ya'ani : I can't bear all this begging

ana la helty wala ma'aia : I have nothing
Ela El-ghawyesh eli ma'aia : but these bracelets
ma goltelak yalla nebehom: I told you let's sell them
wa as-har ana wayak: and i'll spend the night with you
w da'lani: and pamper me

Ana la helti wala bi yaddi : I have nothing
Ela el-khatem eli beyadi: but this ring in my hand
ma goltelak yalla nebeoo: I told you let's sell it
wa as-har ana wayak: and i'll spend the night with you
w da'lani: and pamper me
ala warag el fol dala'ny: On tha jasmine leaves pamper me

ana la helty wala fe wedne: I have nothing
ella el hala' elle fe wedne: but this earring (in my ears)
ma goltelak yalla nebeoo: I told you let's sell it
wa as-har ana wayak: And i'll spend the night with you
bas dala'ni: but pamper me
ala warag el fol dala'ny: on the jasmine leaves pamper me

Helw yalli labes el tob : Oh you handsome wearing this costume
Ana bedi atob ala edak : I want to repent because of you

Ana albi, albi yertah ala eedak : You will put my heart at ease
Alashan bahebak : is it because i love you
Aizni abos ala eedak: you want me to kiss you hands? (Note : to kiss your hands means to beg you)

ana la helty wala fe sadry: i have nothing
gher el ooged elle fe sadry: but this necklace around my neck
ma goltelak yalla nebeoo: i told you let's sell it
wa ashar ana wayak: and we will spend the night together
bas dala'ne: but you just pamper me...
ala warag el fol dala'ny

Ana la helti wala fi regli : I have nothing
Ela el Kholkhal eli fi regli : but this foot lace
ma goltelak yalla nebeoo:I told you let's sell it
wa ashar ana wayak:And i'l lspend the night with you
bas dala'ne: but just pamper me
ala warag el fol dala'ny

ala warag el fol dala'ny : On tha jasmine leaves pamper me
Ana mahmalsh el zol dah ya'ani : I can't bear all this begging

Fatme Serhan sang 2-3 songs live for Dina with Dina's band at the opening gala of Ahlan Wa Sahlan, including Tatihl Shibak. I recognized her from voice alone! It was thrilling, definitely a high point of my trip.
