Very good points. A dancer who was relegated to the open stage at Fantasia won the Stockholm Belly Dance Festival competition last month.

Me too.

I'm all for more local student performance opportunities but the thought of risking missing the last train home after a loong Saturday night full of them... ... anyone else sometimes get those moments when you suddenly realise that on the whole you'd rather be at home in bed with a nice mug of cocoa listening Radio 4?

I always assumed the shows were made up of the teachers, occasionally with students, rather than invited performers. So the show and open stage were separate things rather than the main event and the relegated.

Still doesn't answer the question of how the teachers are selected!

Yes, I think that is the case but as you say, how are the teachers selected...?

Brown-nosing, back-scratching, the usual. Occasionally on merit, Heather Burby's taught at them all, I think, and she's not JWAAD.

Changing the subject to MADN, when I asked at the AGM a couple of years ago how they'd selected the teachers to perform in their teachers' showcase they said that the line-up had been chosen by the committee - guess what, same-old, same-old. Several teachers that I know had been disgruntled as they hadn't been invited to perform or even invited to submit applications.

Same old story, not what you know but who you know...

Alot of the teachers have been JWAAD trained, they do have others like Heather as Suheir has said, Maria d'Silva and Yasmina of Cairo has taught as well as a guest Egyptian teacher one year which I was pleased about. Also Fereshteh taught and performed last year, so it is openng up to other teachers. I guess Jo chooses who performs at Fantasia as it is her event, so she is more than likely going to be endorsing those dancers who have trained with her.
MADN platforms should be more democratic and hopefully they are...but I guess that alot of the committee are also JWAAD trained teachers so they could well be biased to other JWAAD dancers.

Dear all, I'm glad to hear your thoughts on this - I haven't been in London long enough to meet everyone but your thoughts echo mine on the whole JWAAD thing, ie cliquey and pretentious.
