... funny you should mention people flocking to non-Egyptian workshops, you're the second person to mention that in the last couple of days.
So after all the posts elsewhere about sell-out "brassiere" removing workshops I decided it was my moral duty to support my local(ish) real deals! I only went to one workshop but it was pretty well attended and good fun (though I wonder if there was a hint of pandering to the guys as mentioned elsewhere. ). Definitely going on my bellydance calendar. And a great show.

OD.net meeting alert! I met Khaira. Wow. She is lovely and an awesome dancer.

Oh, excellent, I'm so glad you went! So, you didn't feel the urge to rip off any items of lingerie and whirl them around your head during the proceedings?

I would guess that the two shows really *were* the best belly dancers in the UK, unlike several sad efforts I've seen in the past two or three years, claiming that title.

Who are they then, in your opinion? I looked at website but no names are mentioned...

Yes, there was no printed programme either, apparently. Let's see, I'm told there was Fereshteh, Heather Burby, Angela Wooi, Tracey Gibbs, Galit Mersand, Melissa Abraham...someone who was there help me out with the others!

My money's on Angela Wooi as the best dancer in the UK at the moment, she's very impressive.

Nope, but I nearly forgot myself enough to get up and do my improvised baladi thing in front of everyone in a small group. (then I came over all ). Ooh, I lurve baladi...

Can't remember names from the show on the Saturday from the UK. Hey, it was a long show. This is why I collect programmes at belly dance events now

Don't think I'll forget this for a while though... Ozgen dancing in the workshop wearing Asmahan's headscarf thing with glittery silver bobbles and face veil, and melaya.

I am very sad to hear that the workshops were poorly attended... i could not go, it is a treck for me and I also have Joy in a couple of weeks and cant afford both. Sounds like a terrific line up, i just hope that the egyptian teachers are not put off and still come over to teach us. I find it so valuable learning from the egyptian teachers.
Look forward to hearing other reviews of the shows

There are just so many events in the UK now, all competing for the dancers' £s. I really think we're reaching saturation point. There's JoY twice a year now (quality festival), Raqs Britannia (no thanks, Miles), Fantasia(overcrowded), Majma and the new festival Sirocco (set up by the old advisers), Maria's hosting Randa in May, there's a new festival in Devon in June with Yasmina, Shafeek, Maria, Fereshteh...plus smaller festivals springing up all over the country. Is it raising standards?

Give it time. Everyone who attends a class or workshop has different aspirations, not everyone wants to be a star, I'd settle for competent.
