Default Doumbek in UK

Could anyone direct me to an UK online shop?

I Really would like to learn to play ( and trick my fiance into learning lol) but all I find on ebay is of different sizes and quite confusing, AND has mixed reviews and feedback...

Any help would be appreciated!

Yes, I am wondering that too, as I would like to learn to play Doumbek. I can play Bodhran, but I like the tone of the Doumbek. Plus I understand the Doumbek has a plastic skin, unlike the bodhran which changes it's tone with the weather, it being goat skin. I like the consistent tone of a plastic drum skin.

I feel actually drumming the rhythms will help with the dance and vice versa.
I searched on ebay and came to much the same conclusions as yourself, lots of drums, but scant on the information. Many from Israel, though it is the Alexandria I have at least been told to look for, but no information on sizes etc.

So to add, I am looking for some useful information too.

Michelle at Whirling Dervish sometimes carries drums and I think a friend got one from Maria D'Silva

I very much doubt that a plastic skin is traditional on a doumbek though!!!!

Well they used fish skin, and goat skin on cheaper ones, but since the skin is weather dependable many switched to plastic! I am sure therae are still people who use the ones with skin, but I really do not see the need for it for me... since even pro's do use plastic!

Thank you Lisaj I will chek them out!!

Khanjar, if you find smth let me know! I was looking at the Israel ones too, but some of those guys have miserable feedback, so I really dont feel like ordering there!

The other one is Turkish Emporium, but their's are 13", and I wonder if the playing head of those will be a bit on a smaller side?

The Turkish drums are slightly different to the Egyptian style in that from what I have seen of the Turkish style is that the face of the drum, where the drum skin is, makes a right angle with the sides of the drum, a metal clamp arrangement on the edge.

The Egyptian style is the drum skin is clamped under a curved surround, it is this style I would prefer, as it looks hassle free. I would prefer to just play, not start messing about with tensioning devices and such.

Music shops in the UK can get hold of Doumbek, or Darbuka as suppliers call them, but they are more of the Turkish design. Have a try, ask at a music shop to see their percussion catalogues.

As to learning the think, there are plenty of DVDs about, many on ebay. There are also in most cities, drumming groups, which generally cater for all types of hand drum and it is with them that one might find a drummer of the same interest. I went to one once, at a spiritual fair, and it was awesome, mostly frame , African drums, tom toms and tabla, although I do remember the light sound of the Doumbeck, so they are around.

An interesting website ;

I am of course not looking at Turkish style, cos I Go Amir Noum DVD where he uses egyptian style ones....

Here is the one from Turkish Emporium, but I think it is too small:
Darbuka Dumbek Doumbek Djembe Bongo Drum & Case in UK on eBay, also Bongo Tabla Djembe, Drums, Percussion, Musical Instruments (end time 31-Jul-08 21:10:04 BST)

Here is one looks ok but i cant pickup in person:
Darbouka Drum & drum bag on eBay, also Other Drums, Drums, Percussion, Musical Instruments (end time 04-Aug-08 14:01:38 BST)

This one is tiny:
Light Weight ORIGINAL EGYPTIAN DARBUKA Tabla Djemb on eBay, also Bongo Tabla Djembe, Drums, Percussion, Musical Instruments (end time 19-Aug-08 13:47:42 BST)

Have seen others that are painted, etc, but I need something very basic....

Thank you for the link, and I will check out if they have a music store anywhere around...LOL

That's a weird coincidence, I have one that I was planning on selling, if you are interested - I bought it from the Bellydance superstars stall at fantasia a few years back, Hossam Ramzy checked it out & gave it the thumbs up so it's a good drum. I wanted to learn it but it's difficult and I don't have enough time to practice dance, let alone tabla! I am now learning the douf/big round frame drum, but that was really hard to get hold of too, but that's another story!

PM me if you are interested.

Interesting the name of the big frame drum being a douf, a name I suppose like the sound of the drum when it is struck. Also Doum bek for the darbuka/doumbek/djembe, the very name suggests the sound of the drum in the doumbek form. I wonder is it that drums in the area of origin are named because of their tone.

So given the multitude of sizes of dumbek out there, what size of drum would be a good size for a beginner?
