I have concluded that it should be about 41cm tall and have a head of 25cm ??? I might be wrong.... LOL
That's just from looking at websites... Yet seen another one of that size advertized as "SMALL" so wonder then what is the normal one...

Check out videos, where the dance musicians are playing, often where the doumbeck is seen, it will have a transparent skin indicating plastic. Often the plastic skins will have a transfer on them like the Alexandra drums.

I bought my husband a jim bay two or three years ago at a store in Colorado that was going out of business. I just walked around and banged on drums until I found one that sounded good to me. I did the same thing last year in Malachi O'Kearns Bodhran factory in Roundstone, Ireland. Both drums have skin heads. The climate where I live is incredibly dry, and the bodhran in particular tightened up and became a soprano instead of a baritone. The drummer for Colcannon told my husband how to oil the head to bring down the voice, and drums and husband have lived happily ever after. He takes one or the other drums when he goes on his annual motorcycle camping trip, and is learning middle eastern rhythms to play for my classes. Reenie, buy your husband a drum and I'll bet he loves it.

I had an 18 inch bodhran which I played with a beater, lovely tone when the weather was damp, but dry, the tone sort of rang, so I used to spray water on the back of the goat skin to obtain the sound I liked, which was the flat tone.

For anyone else who would like to try their hand at the Doumbek, there is a UK seller on ebay, someone whom I have had the pleasure to deal with and have just taken delivery of an Alexandrian drum with a ten inch head, spare skin and carry bag, all for the princely sum of less than £30 including postage. Postage of which is rapid, I won the auction on Sunday evening and the drum is here with me now, mid day Tuesday.
If you wish to get one of these things, there is an auction running now for another one from this seller, whom I will recommend based upon my experience ; EGYPTIAN DARBUKA, TABLA, DJEMBE - UK SELLER on eBay, also Bongo Tabla Djembe, Drums, Percussion, Musical Instruments (end time 17-Sep-08 21:40:18 BST) Incidently, the drum described in this picture, is the drum I have, same colour and size

Reen! how is your mission going? Have you had any luck yet?
If not, I'm thinking this could prove the perfect excuse for a trip to egypt !Kind of related, I bought a very cheapy little african version of a doumbek when I was in Ibiza for all of 13 euros, and I adore it! It's hardly a 'serious' instrument but it does what I want it to do and has a lovely sound to it! I guess it depends how 'serious' an instrument you are after :-)

Ah, if you want to win on ebay, you are going to have to 'snipe'. I am one of those, an ebay sniper, If I want something, I bid in the last 13 seconds of an auction. Before you think this might be difficult, it is not, for I have a sniping tool on my desktop which gives me the countdown in seconds, and it is synchronised with ebay. I can even bid from the sniping tool, something which has been a help when my ISP had trouble loading ebay.
Check this out ; Home of the eBay Sidebar Tool It really does help ! But I would if I were you, keep an eye on this seller, as it seems he is doing a fair bit of ME selling, more doubeks will be there soon perhaps. And you notice what the drum sold for, well I got mine for much the same price. I am already annoying my neighbours.
