It's not a very good picture and sound, but here is a vid of Shakira's new routine for the song Ojos Asi at her latest tour. Shakira had been working very hard months before the tour and She and Bozenka were working together in Toronto last month on her belly dancing! She starts her drum solo at 4:33. Sorry, my sound died on my iPhone for a couple of minutes because it was so loud!

Could someone kindly tell me what rhythm is playing at the very beginning, and at 5mins into it? Is it Saiidi? Baladi? I seem to have a deficit in being able to recognize rhythms because although I keep studying them I'm still never sure of myself when I listen to music!!

PS. Shakira is a very smart girl and I believe she's much in tune withe cultural aspects of everything she does. She often hires educated guides and historians when she travels so she can learn everything she can. In Barranquilla, Colombia, where she was born, she was much exposed to the arab culture that exists there, and can speak some Arabic.

Does shakira a certain style of belly dance or is she a mixture of styles?

I would describe her style as strictly her own. In other words, Shakira-Dance. But bellydance it is not. However, she has gotten many people interested in it which gives us the opportunity to "spread the word" on what bellydance really is.

She's a singer who moves around a bit - at least as far as I can tell from last vid which is VERY poor quality

Her father was of Lebanese his family came from Lebanon at some point but he himself was born in New York.

Not only is she part lebanese but I think she does preform allot of Lebanese style belly dance. i never knew her father was from New York though. Did anyone know she preformed in a lebanese restraunt each week as a teen?

(maybe some Hula or tahitian) or maybe I mistaken, I could swear some of those moves look polynesian.

Hmmmm, according to Wiki, Shakira was busy recording her first two albums at about that time period. She danced in the restaurant at age 4.

^ The first time she saw a belly dancer was at the age of four in a Lebanese restaurant, and she got inspired and jumped up on the table and started dancing, too. lol.

But it is true that she had been dancing in restaurants at a later age, although I can't remember exactly when. Her first two albums were recorded in a very short time so if her restaurant dancing overlapped those periods, they wouldn't have taken too much time away. She was an actress and a model back then, too!

Here's a pic of her with Emilio Estefan, although it's story is not known other than it was taken in Barranquilla. I just love how she looks!

She'd not do a restuarant gig in that get-up...it looks more like a fancy dress party get up or student wear..pretty Indian made skirt and a coin bra. Looks nice but hardly professional.

Yes, I figured they were playing dressup... I love the pic; I didn't mean to pair it with her restaurant dancing. :) As far as I know, no one knows the story behind the pic; I guesstimate she looks like she's in her late teens and her restaurant dancing days were in her early teens judging by an old youtube vid I can't find anymore. (even so, why could the costume not be used professionally, Liza? Naive student curiosity!)

The restaurant dancers I know wear lycra two pieces mostly. You still see bedlah and chiffon skirts but less so. Here in the UK and I would guess other places in Europe, Agencies and hirers for restaurants, clubs and parties such as weddings demand professional quality costumes. The Indian sets and coin bra and belts just won't do. There might be venues were they are appropraite but they are few and far between and I can't think of one off hand beyond student and hafla wear . Look at Traceylove's girls on her website: Welcome*-*Taste Of Cairo

Maybe she recorded and danced, idk seems like allot to do at once.

Wow I love her blonde hair, but isn't that black hair lovely on her to? i like it. Not sure if it from her restraunt or not. Maybe it was a haloween or dress up party

What I don't understand is that if she has been dancing since age of 4, have BD "in her blood" because of lebanese ancestors, can get Bozenka to help her out with choreos and training, then why isn't she a better bellydancer than she is???

great question. a lot of times you can tell she does a fusion of dances but what I want to know is if and what dance classes besides bellydance she took as a child. or if she learned stuff from choreographers when she got more famous or if its just from observation.

What do you Bellydancers think of Shakira and the way she dances?

i like her dancing and its does not exaclty represent what you learn in a belly dance class but she definetly knows bely dances moves and her fusion/twist to it is so fun to watch. My teacher said "Dont even mention Shakira. I dont know what she does but thats not bellydance". I guess to more to inform us about what was to come, but I read "dislike shakira" all over her face

Dear Violetsidhe,
I am assuming we are talking about Shakira the singer and not Shikara from Ohio. Shakira the singer is not a belly dancer. She is a singer who has occasonally used some of the same movements in her choreographies that belly dancers and other kinds of dancers use.
Belly dance is only in part bout theose movements. it has its own feeling and spirit and has other elements that make it berlly dance that Shakira does not include in her artistic offerings. Please do not confuse what s
Shakira does with belly dance. I know its easy to do this, but I swear to you that she is not a belly dancer, no matter what movements she is using, because the dance is much more than movement.
Regards,
A'isha

How can u say that? What is the difference between shakira and belly dancers who do fusion dance. I mean she does shake her butt in a none bellydancing way but thats her own spin to it. Are you telling me this is not belly dancing (look at link below)?

I have moved this thread into the existing Shakira thread, this is a large thread about Shakira and your question fits here:D
