Default how is this any different?

We've gotta give some props to Shakira. The fact is and remains that she does incorporate many bellydance moves into her choreography. High-five her mama! I see snake arms, shimmeys, chest undulations, hip circles, etc. You can't say that bellydance has not influenced her style. What style of bellydance is she using? Perhaps not one. She uses her own style. Shakira's style. Whether we are dancing tribal, oriental, american, egyptian, or not; isn't the importance of our own style relevant? You cannot have your nose up in the air and explain that just because a dancer does not stick to let's say "egyptian bellydance," then they are not belly dancing. How could you be so self-centered? How is this any diferent than "gothic bellydance" or "modern Indian-styled bellydance?" I think we all have our own style, and we draw this from many that we have seen and let influence who we are as people and dancers. Isn't this what truly makes you unique? Shakira is a unique one, and though she does not properly perform a full choreographed bellydance, this is not what she is about. Shakira tantalizes our sinces with music, song, and dance. I think she's great and I thank her for bringing some bellydance style to the general public. Just maybe, she might make a child wonder, and start to dream. And just maybe, any of you who instruct classes will have a new student arrive today, just because Shakira intrigued them. Think about that! Interesting thought?

Default Shakira, etc.

Dear Malia,
Responses in context below so as not to get too confusing.

A'isha writes- What makes you conclude that they are "belly dance" moves? You can see those same movements in dances from all over the world. There is no such thing as a strictly belly dance "move". I hate to sound like a broken record, but belly dance happens because those moves are performed in a certain context, not because of the moves themselves.

A'isha writes- No one here is saying this from a point of having our noses up in the air, as you put it. We are saying what we say in hopes of really educating people to the nuances and reality and meaning of the dance. There is a point at which it is not belly dance. Shakira is one of them.

How could you be so self-centered? How is this any diferent than "gothic bellydance" or "modern Indian-styled bellydance?"

A'isha writes-I think it is much more self-centered to assume that anything one does can be called "belly dance". Gothic and Hindi dance are not belly dance. I do not consider this to be an ego based statement, merely a factual one since the essence of the dance is definately absent in both styles.

I think we all have our own style, and we draw this from many that we have seen and let influence who we are as people and dancers. Isn't this what truly makes you unique?

A'isha writes- We may all have our own approach, but to say we each have our own style is incorrect, unless we are not calling everything "belly dance". Rachel Brice has her own style...is it belly dance? No. Is it good and beautiful? Yes.

Shakira is a unique one,

A'isha writes- I do not consider Shakira to be unique, but I do consider her to be more talented than many of her peers.

A'isha writes- She does not bring "belly dance" style to the general public. She
utlilzes some movements that can also be found in belly dance, hula, samba, etc. The movements are not unique to belly dance. There is a big difference between what Shakira does and belly dance.

Just maybe, she might make a child wonder, and start to dream. And just maybe, any of you who instruct classes will have a new student arrive today, just because Shakira intrigued them. Think about that! Interesting thought?
A'isha writes- Because she "makes a child wonder and dream", this stull does not make her a belly dancer. It happens rather regularly from what I am told, that peple take a class or two because of Shakira, but then, we have to try to convince them that Shakira is not belly dancing, she is usually throwing in a couple of movements that are not unique to the dance form.

A'isha

I don't care what style Shakira does, or doesn't. She's hot, and that's all that matters. I hope she does another video where she's wiggling through the mud soon.

Default Shakira

Dear Rico,
Yeah, being hot is SSSOOO much more important than anything else, like clarity about what we are doing, why the dance is what it is, etc.,especially when we are talking dance, hunh?? Are you sure your not a 70's Valley Girl in drag?

Default Shakira, etc.

Dear NickNack,
Every Christmas the Israelis invade Malls on the American west coast and they sell about a zillion different products out of small kiosks set up throughout the malls. I bought one called "Antiwrinkle Dead Sea Mud and SeaWeed Mask". I felt MUCH hotter when I was buying it because the distributors were smart enough to have it sold by very good looking, sexy young GUYS for a change instead of lovely young sales girls as we usually see here in America. Their sales technique was to first have the young hot guy rub some of the cream slowly and sensuously into your arm, slowly remove it by putting your arm under just warm watter and all the while crooning to you about how smooth and young your skin will look, etc. Since I adore a good flirt, I had a blast! I also insisted that he let me rub some cream on HIS arm, which he liked immensely!! A good and fairly innocent time was had by all.
Regards,
A'isha

Hehehe, here they sell it all year round, I have immunity from sale though, they know me and don't sell to family I like the guys, they're good for a hug in the middle of the day, and it sure helps that they come from the land of hotness, I just can't wait to move

Shakira actually got me into belly dance. I've always thought of her as a belly dancer and was a bit shocked to see she isn't really!

Personally I think she is, or at least, she isn't a 'pure' belly-dancer but a dancer who puts belly-dance movements into her choreographies. I can understand what people mean when they say she's not a belly-dancer, but for a couple of years now I've thought she was and am sort of trying to recover!

Please tell me this is belly dance:

Shakira has been dancing socially since around the age of 5, this being because she is half Lebanese, her main focus has always been music and writing, she wrote her first song at 8. I know she had some dance training in between Peligro and Pies Descalzos, the first time she worked belly dance into a routine was Ojos Asi, followed by Suerte, since then she's fused many belly dance moves with Latin American style dancing.....Basically she's a muscician who enjoys dancing (and knows that her fans enjoy it) and soemtimes brimgs it into her work (don't you wish you could bring your dance to work?).

I'd call the rope dance an American Style bellydance due to the props used, but that's just my opinion
