Mutated threads never die; they just unravel.

Whenever I see Shakira's rope trick, all I can think of is those long rubber bands that were so popular in exercise classes for a while.

Default Shakira

she is not a professional bellydancer BUT I saw vids of her doing bellydance when she was 8 and singing in arabic, she used to dance in and do shows in a restaurant in Colombia. Maybe she didnt do properly learning everything but she could be a great dancer if she wanted to .

You ever wonder if there's a Cumbia forum, where people debate what Cumbia style Shakira is, if any?

(I'm still just wondering if this is our oldest living thread.)

Yes Aziyade, so old that I believe it can be known as the Methuselah of all threads, one day archeologists will find its tattered remains and gaze upon it with awe

I can't find the website where Shakira was interviewed and she said she was inspired by doing belly dance moves when she watched a belly dancer perform in the Middle East. She's part Lebanese.

I always thought that some of her moves like hip undulations, chest & torso undulations, chest & hip locks, hip rotation, etc. were inspired by belly dance. These moves are being taught in my my belly dance school. It is clear that she is not doing 'belly dance' but does incorporate belly dance moves. Who said here she was doing pure belly dance?

Aren't hip undulations, chest & torso undulations, chest & hip locks, hip rotation belly dance moves? She dances better in Ojos Asi than some of the belly dancers I see on YouTube, hehe...

I also read here that at 5 or something years old, she and her family were in this Arabic restaurant with a belly dancer. After the belly dance, Shakira imitated the belly dancer so well that everyone in the jampacked restaurant stood up to cheer and applaud.

actually i found numerous youtube vids showing shakira's bellydancing as her opening for her shows. i think she's quite good

just google'd for her and found this:

When Shakira was four, her father took her to a local Middle Eastern restaurant, where Shakira first heard the doumbek, a traditional drum used in Arabic music and which typically accompanied belly dancing. Before she knew it, Shakira was dancing on the table, as restaurant patrons responded by clapping enthusiastically. It was then that Shakira said she knew she wanted to be a performer. She enjoyed singing for schoolmates and teachers (and even the nuns) at her Catholic school, but in the second grade was rejected for the school choir because her vibrato was too strong. The music teacher told her that she sounded "like a goat". At school, she says she had been known as "the belly dancer girl", as she would demonstrate a number she learned every Friday at school. "That's how I discovered my passion for live performance," she says

‎Shakira is well known for her dancing in various music videos and in concert. Her moves are based on the art of Arabic belly dancing, a part of her Lebanese heritage her father has a Lebanese background but was raised in Colombia. She often performs barefoot. Shakira says she learned this form of dance as a young teen to overcome her shyness. She also mentioned in a MTV interview that she learned how to belly dance by trying to flip a coin with her belly. The intense training has afforded her a fluidity in her body movement most seen in the videos to her hits "Ojos Así", "La Tortura", "Hips Don't Lie" and "Beautiful Liar" including "Suerte". She has had several belly dance choreographers, including award-winning Bellydance Superstar Boženka. As the MTV Making the Video for "La Tortura" reveals, she worked with Jamie King on the choreography, but ended up creating most of it herself. Shakira has told many interviewers that she had grown up listening to oriental music, which influenced many of her earlier works. Shakira is known to be a fan of rock music, especially that of The Police, AC/DC, and Led Zeppelin.

I think I read this article before in Wikipedia. I looked it up when I got into a debate on a Christian forum, because someone made the statement that Shakira is a professional bellydancer.

Nicknack, you have a wonderful sense of humor.
