Well Aisha, then the loss of those students that have left is not that big is it? There are OTHERS that come to stay and they understand that Shakira uses belly dance Elements in her choreos!

Dear Reen,
I would say that she does not use belly dance elements, but instead uses movements that are seen in many dances.

Hi everyone,

I guess you are all bored with this subject, but since I am new here, I want to give my opinion

I agree that Shakira is not a bellydancer, and I remember that at Beginner´s Level my teacher talked to us about this.

But the truth is that Shakira is one of the reasons why in some countries in Latin America we started to get interested in BD. Back in her days, before crossing over (since she started singing in English, I think she became too commercial) her song "Ojos Asi", introduced many latin americans to BD. The first step is to get interested, then you research, study and learn in the correct way. I can say that thanks to her, I found an activity that fullfills my artistic side.

and I am so happy for that!

Last thing, someone wrote that Shakira mixes Salsa in her dance style. Ummm, not really, in "Hips don´t lie" she uses a little bit of Cumbia (danced in Colombia where she is from) but I could never picture her dancing salsa...

Shakira helped other girls in U.S 2 understand that u can combine hip-hop, jazz, and other dances into a whole new one!!!

Exactly. More like a melting pot of different styles to form one - Shakira's style. But it's not bellydance as such...
