Bin Rodi I don't understand whay you are not hearing me. How many times have I told you I ALREADY KNOW THAT ISLAMIC TEACHERS, IMAMS ETC DO NOT SUPPORT DANCE, I KNOW THAT ALREADY, SO WHAT ARE YOU TRYING TO TELL ME? I tell you what, why don't you go to your priest and ask him if the Coptic church supports belly dancing, can you show me in the bible where it says Christainity supports women who dance and sing in public? |

Okay, I'm leaping in here and I hope I don't regret it.
I have about 35 years of background in legal and historical and biological research. I do research daily in the course of my job, and the internet is my least trusted source unless I am using a site of known quality such as WestLaw or various Secretary of State sites. I have even tripped across inaccuracies in each of these. All good research is checked, cross-checked, and confirmed in multiple independent sources before a hypothesis is cautiously accepted as a possible fact. The poorest sort of research begins with a hypothesis and a researcher who says, "I will, by god, prove that I am right." Such a researcher tends to accept all evidence that backs up his contention and ignore all that does not. The best researchers formulate their hypothesis without passionate attachment to being right or wrong, and explore every avenue in an attempt to uncover the truth of the matter. I do not trust the internet for the same reasons Tarik lists, nor do I trust any single source of information unless it is backed to the hilt with independent research and, if possible, primary sources. I was the terror of undergraduate students writing poorly researched papers when I taught agriculture thirty years ago, and I make no apologies for it now. Shoddy research makes me nuts. Good research leads to some stiff arguments, but those arguments can move the debaters further down the road of knowledge as long as the debaters aren't totally stuck on their own pet theories. I will now step carefully off my soapbox, trying to avoid any sensitive toes in the process. Last edited by Shanazel; 01-02-2007 at 07:51 PM. |

So this is a thread about bellydance and religion. We have discussed what religions don't support bellydance, but which ones do? It seems like it's mostly the polytheistic pagan type religions that support a woman's choice to dance or not dance. Are there any monotheistic religions that don't look down upon bellydance? What do Hindus think about bellydance? Buddists?
