O.k. now we admit it at last: belly dance is our religion
So let's pray with zills, tablas, shimmies and undulations, waving the veils...Amen.

Dear Shanazel,
Well, of course we will have "Hafladays". Maybe they would be Eid this or Eid that. The Eid in honor of Saint Fifi, (Eid Il Fifi) or we could celebrate on the day Mouna finally divorced her Saudi husband and started dancing again!! We could celebrate when Soheir Zaki came to dance in America in the 1970s, or Nagwa Fouad's amazing appearance in San Francisco, or Randa's miracle appearance in Norway, etc. Gosh, this new religion is really taking off. ( I have the gut instinct that this is not much different from how all the other religons got started....!!!) Regards, A'isha |

Oooh, saints, we need saints. Unfortunately, saints need to be dead and performing miracles- like still dancing on videos thirty years after the funeral? And pilgrimage sites. Any AmCab dancers out there up for a pilgrimage to San Francisco's North Beach? Well, me, neither (I try to stay out of California), so maybe we can throw a hafla across the border in Oregon instead.

Dear Shanazel,
We could start a new trend and have live saints... in fact maybe it ain't so new since the Tibetans and some other gorups have been worshipping live saints for eons. But let's face it; there is nothing wrong with celebrating sainthood before the revered one is croaked!! The better to witness their beatificness!! Regards, A'isha |

Nah, let's have saints (dead and revered) and idols (live and- well, idolized). And then there can be the graven images- ooh, cool- and the sacred cows (but maybe we shouldn't go there given the derogatory meaning of "cow" when appled to women).
On the other hand beatificness is such a great word that perhaps we should form a whole new genre of worthies to be called beatificiniks- they could listen to beat poetry and Charlie Parker as well as middle eastern stuff. Last edited by Shanazel; 01-30-2007 at 07:40 PM. |

Dear Shanazel,
I do have a habit of making up words, but I figure it is an ancient pasttime among humans or we would not have so darn many of them. Beatificness- If this word were in the dictionary, it would mean great and blessed blissfulness. Used in a sentance: "Her beatificness shone, like billions and billions of tiny starlike bubbles, brighter than the rhinestones on her $2000costume." I also like Gihugent- meaning totally big. Used in a sentance: I had a gihugent bruised bump on my forehead where she bonked me with her zill for saying she could not dance her way out a paper bag." And Rudittity- The noun or pronoun or adverb or something for Rude. Used in a sentance: "She reached a new high in lows and was the epitome of rudittity when she stated that my bra made my breasts oozed out of my costume like two extremely overripe peaches". And finally Glurb- This is the stuff that babies spit back out when they first are learning to eat from a spoon. Used in a sentance: "When I was out in the audience collecting tips for 45 minutes, somebody's drunk boyfriend got glurb on my cleavage." Regards, A'isha Webster |
