Default Drum Solos

Which dancers out there are in your opinion great or very good in their interpretation of a drum solo?

Wow that's a hard one! Maybe if we could pick one song and see how different dancers express the drums!!!
Sahra Saidi comes to mind as it's very popular. What do you guys think?

Yes that is a hard question. However, I immediately thought of Carla Silvera. I haven't watched this clip for a while and I can't turn the sound on 'cause I'm at work so I can't really give a reason for liking it right now.
What do you think?

Default Drum solo

Dear Gang,
I have seen two over the top fabulous drum solos in my life on video! One was from Hanan of Egypt, who usually danced like she had a stick up her tease, but for some reason she did this one INCREDIBLE drum solo and they got it on video. The other was a show that Nagwa Fouad did in Germany. Her drum solo was SO fabulous that I got a new appreciation for her skills and talent that I had never had before. She has never been one of my favorite dancers, but this drum solo work was just so great.
In person, I once saw Cassandra Shore working with Jalalledin Takesh and his band.Cassandra and the drummer were incredibly good together.
Mustafa Al Khedairi from Seattle and I once did a drum solo together that people said was outrageously good, and I felt that it was so right when we were performing. The show starred Nakish and Morocco and it was probably 15 years ago now or more, so I was much younger and in much better shape than I am now. I give full credit to him because he is the drummer of my dreams and if I ever had the $$ to put together my perfect band, he would be my lead drummer!! I adore this man!
Regards,
A'isha

i thoroughly enjoyed looking at that. I have to admit i was kinda puzzled in the first 50 secs. with the veil but then i realised it was just her entrance (another point i want to talk about)
I asked the question because i was wondering what qualities in a dancer would make a good drum solo,
is it only the extensive use of movement vocabulary that is in time with the music?

how does the structure of the music have any influence if any on the movements? can a dancer then predict the changes in a song so that her movements can reflect changes?

as for entrances, unlike the initial you tube, what are other ways one can enter on stage...or is it just a simple walk in and stand still?

Aisha, you wouldn't happen to have those examples to post for us to see?

I have always had a fascination about drum solos because i think it requires skill in listening and interpretation, i like the idea of moving the body in time to specific drum beats or accents (maybe its my like for drumming on the whole lol)

I am biased, but I feel safe in saying that my mentor/teacher, Lotus Niraja, is fabulous at drum solos. If you search for Lotus Niraja on Youtube, you should be able to find some video.

Dear Kayshier,
Unfortunately I do not. Efen if I had the film, I would not know how to post it here, but if you like, I can try to figure out which videos they are on for Hanan and Nagwa and post that info here.
You asked about how people know what to do to drum solos. In Egyptian music, there is often a sort of path that is followed even when the drum work is taqsim. There are reasonably regular sort of mathematical patterns, would be a way to put it, that you seem to find over and over in Egyptian music and you sort of learn to hear them and feel them, if that makes sense. I do not know how to speak in the scientific language of music, but someone here probably could explain this concept a lot better than I can on an intellectual level. I can only talk about it in terns of hearing and feeling it. You are anticipating what comes next because that is what is supposed to come next in the natural progression of the musical path, so to speak...This lack of that patterning is one of the biggest differences I find between ethnic belly dance music and westernized music. It used to drive me crazy to try to do a drum solo with some westernized bands because a lot of times I could not hear or feel their path.
Regards,
A'isha

My favorite solo so far is from Suheir Zaki, at a Germany Concert after she had retired and came back for some shows.
She is sooo earthy and same time you FEEL the music throu her body !!
