More recently I have seen Leyla Jouvana and her husband Roland (of Germany perform at 2 different festivals.
I personally thought she was great. She had a lovely stage presence, was technically gifted and great fun. I dont know if there are any youtube clips out as I am crap at this sort of thing. Everything is so much better live though. |

Dear Gang,
The Mouna video is probably about 35 years old or more. I am trying to remember things about it. I THINK it was done in a club in London if memory serves. She is no wearing a shebeka and at that time the Egyptian dancers always did if they were in Egypt. I have this on one of my old videos somewhere, but I am sorry to say I can't remember which one. this is classic, sexy, lovely Mouna. I love her. Dear Aya, I the Suheir Zaki one in Germany the one where she is wearing a fullish tunic and she kind of goofs off with the drummer? I think it was 1990 and she was sponsored by Badawia , I think her name was, of Germany? I LOVE that whole show!! I think she never, ever danced better. Suheir and Mouna are my dance heroes. Regards, A'isha |

I loved this clip. She was so natural, but inventive to in how she responded to the drums and it was very, very sexy. I thought it was very fun how she went over to the one drummer and how they interacted with one another. [quote=Aisha Azar;83425] This is the video of Hanan that I mentioned to Kayshier. For those of you who are all worried about the "look" on your face, please note that her face was completely unguarded and that was part of the allure of her solo, as well as her very human approach to the dance instead of it being all studied and perfected and technically intense. That very visceral quality, that natural sexuality, that power of femaleness. that allure and mystery of humanness is what is what so attracts me to Egyptian style belly dance in a way that no other style quite does. THIS is what the dance is at its heart. Regards, A'isha [ /QUOTE] I think she is a lovely dancer, but this one didn't move me quite as much. Maybe because I kept wanting her to not keep her mouth open as much - that looked a little odd to me. The dancing was great, though. Last edited by Phoebedances; 08-24-2008 at 04:44 AM. |

Dear Jen,
A Shebeka is the stomach net used in Egypt to follow the letter rather than the spirit of the law in covering the mid section of the body. Dear Phoebe, Hanan often danced with her mouth open and so did Tahia Carioca. Supposedly Carioca did it because she had asthma. As for Hanan being a lovely dancer, frankly she is not one of my favorites. She usually had this ramrod poster and danced extremely high on her toes. She stood almost up too straight and held her head and neck stiffly most of the time. For some reason she broke out of her own mold on this drum solo and danced better than ever before or after from what I can tell! She was one of the most gossiped about dancers of her time! Regards, A'isha |

I never knew that about Tahia. Stiffness in a dancer is something that is hard for me to watch. It seems to put a barrier between audience and dancer. What clips I've seen of Samia Gamal I've really adored because of how adorable and natural she acts while dancing. Very flirtatious and graceful. ![]() I was trying to explain that the other day to a guy who knew nothing of Middle Eastern dance, that there is a difference between flirting with an audience and being sexy and being downright sleezy and vulgar. Not sure I got through to him though. ![]() Today I thought of a question I wanted to ask you, Aisha, about layering, shimmying, and drum solos. I've been trying to work on being sharper and more precise with some movements and working on a Said Mrad song that has a drum solo in it. I also have a DVD of Michelle's pop, lock and shimmy drum solo work that I've been using to work on some technique and combos. Before my surgery I had been working on doing shimmies with my obliques instead of my knees and was getting better at it, then I had like two weeks where I couldn't do them after surgery. Michelle in her video does alot of her shimmies that she layers with stomach movements. However, rather than her shimmies being driven from the abdominals, she uses her knees, then uses her stomach muscles to put the locks or undulations in. It made me wonder today. Should just regular shimmies be done with abs, but if you layer on like a lower ab lock or an undulation, switch to a knee driven shimmy so it's easier to do. Or should all of them always come from abdominals? |

Is this a drum solo performed by Sadie here? The first time I saw this, I was totally spellbound by her skills! I was looking for something though - probably more depth and emotion or audience contact?
YouTube - Sadie BellyDance This one, I think, is a very good instructional drum solo from Sadie: YouTube - Belly Dance Drum Solo with Sadie I have yet to watch the drum solos you girls recommended here and prepare to be mesmerized! Thank you for sharing.

I'm tired.
My body aches. Sadie taught her signature drun solo moves today. Did I mention that I'm tired ![]() I moved more muscles in a tinier spaces and faster than I ever imagined. Control over internal muscles are the key. Practice unlocks the door. I don't need to pop-lock it like Sadie to do a drum solo, but I have learned a few more 'tricks' Did I mention that I'm tired and sore? Yasmine
