I asked the question because i was wondering what qualities in a dancer would make a good drum solo,
is it only the extensive use of movement vocabulary that is in time with the music?
Yasmine says: No not really, but rather an extensive knowledge on what moves work best for certain segments of music! Also control of how the body visualizes the music via percussive elements. Drum solos refer to two things: first the tabla(def, riqq etc) is the only instrument that is playing..so it is the solo effort of the drum that creates not only the melody but also the beat. The second reference is that it's solo effort of a dancer as he/she connects to the music.

how does the structure of the music have any influence if any on the movements? can a dancer then predict the changes in a song so that her movements can reflect changes?

Yasmine says; Yes!! A dancer must understand how the music is constructed in oreder to dance to it. The 'rules of four" is one structure that allows the dancer to anticipate the flow and change within the music. In other words a phrase of music will repeat 4 times before it changes..usually the 4th phrase will contain an embellishment that signals the upcoming change. In order to understand this concept JUST LISTEN TO MUSIC, over and over again. It's very evident within the video clip. Also understanding basic rhytms is important as well as knowing each drummer has his/her own flair..the music will begin to play and speak effortlessly within the being of the dancer!

as for entrances, unlike the initial you tube, what are other ways one can enter on stage...or is it just a simple walk in and stand still?

Yasmine says: Yes there are a variety of ways to conduct an entrance, from demure to dramatic, sweeping and grand to sultry and enigmatic. The entrance tells the audience "I have arrived", it should be the hook that grabs the audience. of course tat depend son the music and mood of the dancer
The basic concepts that a professional dancer employs are not mysteries, but rather a honing of skill sets that derive from understanding music and the emotional connection to it. It has been said many times on the forum that it's not just about the moves....the dance vocabulary must connect to intangible but real concepts as well.

Default Hanan

Dear Gang,
This is the video of Hanan that I mentioned to Kayshier. For those of you who are all worried about the "look" on your face, please note that her face was completely unguarded and that was part of the allure of her solo, as well as her very human approach to the dance instead of it being all studied and perfected and technically intense.
That very visceral quality, that natural sexuality, that power of femaleness. that allure and mystery of humanness is what is what so attracts me to Egyptian style belly dance in a way that no other style quite does. THIS is what the dance is at its heart.
Regards,
A'isha

Sahra Saidi is a common drum song by Gamal Gommaa. In fact our troupe performs to this song, here are two clips by Ansuya and Aziza

YouTube - bellydance superstars - ansuya - sahra saidi (trommel)

YouTube - Aziza Nawal - Sahra Saidi

It's easy to watch the dancers, but close your eyes and hear and feel the drums! Hear the accents and the beat , how many timesdoes a phrase repeat? How does the dancer respond to the phrases? Does the drums make you feel joyous? Are the dancers expressing the emotional part of the drums and not just dancing to the beat?
I think each dancer has done a great job, even though the song is the sme each dancer makes it different. I think that's what is all about.

More dancers and drum solos:
Our own Salome

YouTube - Dança do ventre - Salome rakset el fadaa

Salwa of Belgium. She begins with a wonderful entrance and softly dancesto the music, then she launches into percussive movements as she responds to the drums..about halfway through

YouTube - Salwa @ Duisbourg Festival

Default Drum Solo With Mona Said

Please note her expression and the live musicians that played a variety of percussive instruments. She dances to each one!

Yasmine

sometimes she acknowledges the base rhythm, sometimes she acknowledges the accent drumming. sometimes her lower body does something completly different from her upper body at the same time (something my teacher told me to aim for in learning the dance) her whole body is expressing the music!
i suppose there is no hard and fast rule per say as to how and when to acknowledge what..i guess that is up to the dancer.
