oops,
really? Do you know why? I'm just curious not critisizing.
I would say that you should be able to do it both ways and fit it to the music because they look a bit different.
Also drills and dancing are not the same thing always. Asmahan had some very strict isolation drills, though she said several times "this is for practice only, when we dance we are not robots, the whole body moves" etc...

She says its to teach/enforce isolation. She'll allow the "other" way in intermediate/advanced classes - much for the same reason you state above. But she wants us to learn it the "right" way first.

I've also encountered other teachers who teach the two techniques in reverse order. *shrug*

one thing helps me with these instead of concentrating on raising up hip I concentrate on lowering down hip then switch to pushing out top hip. Helps to avoid getting stuck by over-pushing up.

I see, that makes a lot of sense. Thank's for explaining, Zorba!

Roll Eyes

hi there ...it perhaps has to do with the muscle,s on the side are a bit,,short,, not realy do but perhaps streching them will help...i see this a lot with students that have narrow hips or students that are weight lifting or do to many ,,situps,, and then not streching enough after practise ,so the muscle stay a bit ,,short,,...try this...lay on your back on the floor ,then hold your arms next to your head, tip of your fingers touching the side of your head, elbows bend touching the floor next to your head...now raise your right knee and touch the floor with your innerknee point on the left side of your body...the right leg stay strait lying on the floor...now this is the most inportant point your elbows most stay on the floor both of them....now if your knee is not able to go there and touch the floor, your muscle is a bit short....so you can exercise it and slowly everyday try and ,,bounce push it ,, a bit till you reach the floor...try on your matrass first so you can cheat a bit ,if that go,s well do it on the floor...make sure your elbows stay on the floor when dooing it....go slow and carefull about it if done wrong you can hurt your back so slowly slowly you will feel the pull on your side what is fine but take care....have fun this exercise is very good for streching all the midrif...have a nice day Lydia(hope i explaned it ok)

Just tried this again. just use the push down for the first one. You can then use obliques to pull back up and exchange as usual. Just stops you overconcentrating on the up and then getting stuck until your body gets used to it.

Well, I don't go so far as capital punishment, but I am one of those who start students off with flat footed mayas. It forces students to learn isolation and core movement as opposed to driving movement with the legs.
