Default Iraqi troupe

Dear Gypsy,
Very nice. Do they seem to be patterned after Reda's work a bit? I love that drum thing that you find in a lot of Iraqi music. ( Its very prevalent in the first song they use.) One of my favorite old record albums is by an Iraqi percussionist named Saadoun Bayati, whom I love to listen to, AND he is beautiful to look at, too! I would love to know more about Iraqi dance.
Thanks for sharing.
Regards,
A'isha

If you want to know more about them type this into youtube or google: الفرقة القومية العراقية للفنون الشعبية
There are a few other clips posted on youtube but the resolution quality is terrible you can barely see what the dancers are doing.

About Reda: I have no idea, sorry. Maybe someone else would know.

Dear Gypsy,
Unfortunately, I don;t think I can type Arabic into the net, but I might be able to type "Iraqi Dance" and get something. The only problem is, I will not know what I am seeing, as I did not here, unless there is some explanation in English or Pig Latin, which are the only languages I speak or write fluently!! (LOL)
Regards,
A'isha

Default Folklore troupes

A bit of a relic of the 50's and 60's flirtations with socialism in the Arab world. Seems more authentic than such experiments as the Rahbani troupe where they boldly used Russian tunes with Arabic lyrics. A lot of governments brought in Russian directors and choreographers to develop popular culture into a showcase item that they could present with pride to the world at large.

I love that Iraqi drum. It's called a chobi, it's a very Iraqi instrument. Most of the Iraqi music you find on youtube is either the classic stuff, music by Kathem el Saher, or Kawliya (Gypsy) music.
