Ok sorry that this is another post from me - but this is priceless.
apologies for the Italian translation as I've never learnt it mi sono ispirato agli anni trenta, nei costumi,... I am inspired by the 30s, the costumes, the movements, above all their spirit. .......oriental dance .....as much influenced by the cinema and the music of the times (eg Casablanca) Casablanca was made in 1942, 2 years after the Second World War started, which was a pretty sharp division from the 30s. And then why the tribal BDers at the start and then Oh JUST WHY OH WHY!!! I recommend watching in full screen as although you lose detail you get to see some of the pointless wandering around etc. |

Riiiiight. I suppose if you could be inspired by the '30s to do something that has no discernable '30s vibe whatsoever... somehow... I dunno, comes of being a scientist I guess, what would I know?
On the positive side, at least the tribal fusion girls got their bit over with quick and could have been first down the pub. ![]() Egyptian Ella is a genuine 20's (?early 30s) song. IMO you need to get the "this is a novelty fusion" message across pretty quickly, with costume/ choreography/ facial expressions. This clip misses the first verse of the song which sets the scene in the lyrics, and there might well have been more Charleston moves earlier to balance the fusion out. So as a novelty fusion number in the right time and place I think it works. The only link the second one had to belly dance was the word shimmy.... ![]() |

I didn't realise it was a real song but I found the lyrics -
an inspiration to us all Ella was a dancing girl who started getting fat Every day saw three more pounds on Ella Until one day she found she'd lost her job because of that And to make it worse, she'd lost her fella She took a trip to Egypt to forget And she made such a hit that she's there yet ... So if you hear of a gal who can quake and shake 'Till it makes you think of a nervous snake They're speakin' ... of Egyptian Ella She weighs two-twenty but that's O.K. They like 'em plenty down there that way She has the love ... of every fella And when she shakes and when she starts Down by the River Nile The boys all take their old sweet-hearts And throw them to the crocodiles And every sheik in the audience Jumps up and yells that "she's immense!" They're cheering for Egyptian Ella. All the other dancers from the desert to the Nile One by one admit that they are jealous For although they dance each night and wear the sweetest smile Ella's is the tent that draws the fellas For Ella has a dance that they can't steal 'Cause nothing else could do it but an eel So if you hear of a gal who can quake and shake 'Till it makes you think of a nervous snake They're speakin' ... of Egyptian Ella She weighs two-twenty but that's O.K. They like 'em plenty down there that way She has the love ... of every fella And when she shakes and when she starts Down by the River Nile The boys all take their old sweet-hearts And throw them to the crocodiles And every sheik in the audience Jumps up and yells that "she's immense!" They're cheering ... for Egyptian Ella |

I'm getting really overexcited now. I have been inspired by all these great examples. I'm going to announce a new style. DiscoBelly. No not your average over 50 bloke after more than a few bevvies, but me in a white suit and flars, or possibly one flare (see above), cut away to show me coin bra and belt (no skirt), then I'm going to perform to Saturday Night Fever

I enjoyed that too. That's because they are obviously very good dancers having fun and not being deathly serious about creating new dance forms and artisitc expression. At least I hope so. In a similar vein.
