I don't do tribal, but I enjoy good tribal dancing.
![]() However, I don't think in terms of tribal=non-glittery, raqs sharqi=glittery. Costumes are a superficial part of the dance, and they change over time. The costumes being worn by the current crop of Egyptian dancers are not very glittery; whereas the costuming in some of the new offshoots of tribal fusion are quite glittery. The true difference lies much deeper. Tribal is a world fusion dance of late 20th century American origin using elements from many cultures. Raqs sharqi is a traditional dance from the Middle East and North Africa, probably of late 19th century origin. To the degree that it utilizes elements from other cultures, those elements were added within the culture of origin. They don't really look anything alike, so if you garbed dancers of these styles in leotards or potato sacks, the difference between them would still be very obvious. I also don't like just the word tribal, because it implies it's some kind of specific regional traditional folk dance, which its not. ATS or tribal fusion is better, IMO. Sedonia |

I, too, love Tribal. Something about it just clicks for me.
The woman in this video is Ela Enchanting from Boston, MA. I saw this performance and there was not one audience member untouched by it. She is unbelievable. In fact, I was so inspired by her that I began a frenzy of listening to every song in my CD collection for Tribal rhythms, and then agreed to dance to one of them in front of my classmates in two weeks! I'm so excited! (Scared spitless - my dance vocabulary is sooo limited, and I've never choreographed, or even thought of such a thing, in my entire life - but very, very excited!) Okay, not sure I've figured out the youtube embed thing correctly, so here's the direct url YouTube - Ela Boston Bellydance 2

That was an awesome video, she's great. There's a second one there I also had a look at: http://www.youtube.com/v/5dm3C7oZ4QQ
I love the lock and pop moves, and it's all so controlled and precise, that sort of discipline would then help all aspect of dance... and life. Kind of like getting little angry kids to learn karate :P

Yeah I love the look of it. I don't actually dance tribal style, but I am definitely intrigued by it. Rachel is one of the most imitated dancers out there. She is very inspiring and her style is instantly recognizable! I love watching her BDSS performances! |

I am going to introduce my new user self here
so hello to all wonderful Bellyrinas !!What about tribal? It is THE style for me, after learning the basics for 2 years and going to classes (classical BD) just by the way and because my inner dancer told me to ... I found Rachel on youtube by accident, and immediately googled Tribal in Vienna and got into a troupe ... and love it above everything! I found my passion and it is now a part of who I am. It is exactly the way my body wants to move to music. It is the costuming and the feeling of the dance, the connection to the Earth and Sky and my Inner Goddess and the sisters in the Tribe. After I found Tribal, I know I won't dance any other BD style. I love to watch them though :-) Check out Welcome - tribe.net, there are lots of tribes and helpful forums! My tribe: Wuestenrosen (translates Desert Roses)

I've just been learning the more glitzy side to bellydancing for the past year and a half (I still consider myself a beginner, although Im in the advanced class!!) and my instructor thought it would be a good idea to teach us some tribal for 8 weeks. We're doing a show in March 2009, and my instructor likes the idea of a story in a show, so we're making a little story out of it, and we wanted to bring some tribal into it for a bit of a change in dance style.
Im enjoying it so so much! I said in another thread the reasons why I like the more glitzy side, and why I like the tribal side -- for different reasons. I like the tribal because it helps me with my moves, accentuates them, its a little easier broken down. ![]()

I've been dancing for just on a year, with Kashmir, and I'm a very avid YouTube watcher, but tribal in any form is not for me. I'm not exactly sure why now - once I would have said it's because some of the women look so very fierce and grim, but I've been corrected on that!! but I think some of the things I don't like is the idea of a 'sisterhood', and of the intrusion of a mix of movements from different cultures to create a synthetic 'tribal' dance, and I do find some of the dances quite robotic and a bit formulaic.
Having said that, I do love quite a lot of the music that's used in tribal style and offshoots - love the slightly industrial music, and the mesmeric nature of some of it. I also love, love, love the really authentic Mohammed Abd al-Wahhab music, and Moktar Al Said stuff. I do like the costuming of both types of dance - although they're completely different! Some of the tribal is quite weird, but perhaps I'm just a sheltered wee thing wanting the wild side to OUT!!

I don't like the music. I started out thinking that tribal was what I liked when I had a very fairylike teacher, but I have moved over to egyptian because I like the fluidity and the interpretation of the music. For me you can't really interpret the industrial style music of tribal. I also don't fid tribal to be earthy. i find egyptian to be far more sexy as I like to use the whole body, and not isolate everything. however, I do like to drill tribal style movements, as starting late in life, I find that tribal teachers and dvds really give me the muscle strength to dance any way i want to
