I can only get American/Egyptian/Lebanese ("cabaret") style classes here, but I am learning a little improv tribal from a local collective, and I am using some tribal fusion videos for home study.

I prefer ATS(with the bright colors and sumptuous fabrics) rather than tribal fusion(dark and moody). I get the concept of 'tribe' of women dancing for pure joy than strictly entertainment. But I love the glitz and glamour of Caberet styles and the individuality of solo styling. Take some time to read though some of older posts as we discuss tribal dance styles just as much as any other.

I've been studying/dancing ATS, improv tribal and tribal fusion for about four years. My favorite dancers are:
Fatchance Bellydance
Zafira
Zoe Jakes
Kami Liddle
Naimah (local dancer here in Baltimore, MD)
Kallisti Tribal (admittedly, I am biased because I am a former member, however, this girls bring such joy to improv tribal and I love that)

Just curious, because I haven't really seen very many people mention it.

If so, who are your favorite dancers and why? Who are your least favorite and why?
I believe this forum and Bhuz are about the only Oriental friendly boards around. So here you may not get a lot of Tribal people - but there definitely some.

And actually some Tribal is glittery and some non-Tribal is not. My dance style of choice is a beledi - in all forms from a fusion with oriental (ie I'm wearing a bit of glitz but the arms are low and relaxed and the movements a little looser) to full blown folkloric. All solo improvised in theory if not practice.

But to answer your question, Fifi, of course. That woman has balls and can dance very well without getting cutesy at one extreme or cold and asexual at the other.

Tribal, to me, has always been less a costuming description than a way of referring to group improv (ATS). I know that's an old-school way of looking at it.

As far as costuming, I LOVE coins. The old Bal Anat look, and what you usually see Rhea of Greece wearing -- I ADORE that! The pants with the little vests, and dripping in coins... drool. THAT used to be considered "tribal" but to me, "tribal" costuming is the flying skirts and cholis and turbans, or even the "tribal fusion" look of Melodias, hair pulled up off the head, and sports bras.

I have to honestly say that while I like working through the Tribal Fusion dvds I have (because it FEELS so good -- like moving yoga or a moving massage on the body) I haven't quite developed an appreciation for WATCHING a lot of Tribal Fusion. But then, it took me ages to really enjoy an ATS performance, too.

I love Tribal. I teach and perform Tribal Fusion, and I study ATS too. My favorite dancers are Carolena Nericchio (I probably just butchered her last name) from FCBD, Jill Parker from Ultra Gypsy, and Olivia Kessel from Zafira.

I absolutely LOVE Tribal and the funny thing is I don't know where I get it from. My heritage is German, Norwegian and Danish and nowhere do I see bellydancing in general in any of them. Maybe I get it from my mom who loved to dance around?....

All this talk of tribal is really tempting... when I first saw Rachel Brice on YouTube I was just in awe, and I get that maybe to some she's the "popular" person to like but the girl has talent in an almost freaky way. My fabulous boyfriend even got me a DVD of arms & posture training by her for Christmas (he's so clever! love him to bits). I'll certainly have to check out what I can of some of the other dancers you've all mentioned.

I understand when people say that when they see tribal it just seems to fit them, I can't wait to give it a go because the impressions that I get from seeing it (only on YouTube so far, the real thing will surely give my goosebumps) is that it's just me, the grounded earthy movements and costuming are calling me.

I haven't got the flu... I've got tribal fever!
