Haha, those are very good examples Shanazel I can tell you another funny story. There is a German belly dancer (who claims to be professional) in my city in Germany, who has given herself the artist name "Chara" (well the "ch" is not spoken like "k" but something like "kh" in Greek), which is Greek and means "joy" (probably she likes Greece). The fatal thing though is, that Chara in Arabian means "shit" So I visited a show with some Arabian friends some time ago and this lady was dancing at that show. When my Arab friends heard the announcement about her, they were rolling on the floor laughing. Imagine, a belly dancer who is named "shit"

You are very likely right, Reenie!

Oh, poor Chara! Did someone tell her what was going on so she could change her stage name? My real name doe not translate well into Spanish, though nothing nearly as bad as that, and when I am with Spanish speaking people, there are sometimes a few giggles.

I would have told her, but I had no opportunity to talk to her after the show and since I don't know her personally there is no chance telling her. I hope some sincere Arab will tell her.

Hi Mariagreek,
Hope you are reading these posts. I would like to know about what you meant by "pre islamic Raqsharqi".

Janaki, I'm afraid she isn't. She probably logged in just to post the promotion text about her Raqshobic. Well it happens often that people log in just to advertise themselves, their studios, their fusions or whatever

Default about Raqshobic

Hellow dear friends,
I saw all you wrote and i have to say that first of all Raqshobic is a new way to have very good shape.(dance and gym) you can understand this i believe.
About Raqsharqi and pre-Islamic dance ,how could you say this?
There are many of egyptologists ,great teachers of History in Ancient Egypt and after. if you mean we dont know about Egypt culture before Islam i believe it is not good. There are a lot of people they know ,what about us dancers?
And ,my dear chryssanthi ,here in Greece as you know ,the dancers at this time ,have done hard work and they read because they are interesting in (what is the story and the History of oriental dance). You are Greek also ,so i think you under estimate greekdancers. Most of them do seminars and workshop in Egypt,Europe and Uk.They keep going.
And people smile a little bit,it is very nice. Why so "bad" ?
Sorry for causing bad feelings.I dont like this.I believe dance is here ,new things are here and so the Past.
Mariagreek.

I am sorry, Mariagreek, perhaps I am just dense, but I still don't understand what you mean about pre-islamic raks sharqi. Obviously we have no videos of archaic dances, so is this something that has been extrapolated from paintings or contemporary verbal descriptions?
