Thank you, Sara. I love Samia Gamal (as if no one knows that by now) and wish to goodness they'd let her dance for longer in this clip.

Aye, lol. I really enjoy the Arabic way of dancing with veils. I'm not too keen on long veil performances. I find them dull after a few seconds. I hate doing them in class too, lol. Proper bitter youth me when it comes to veil performances.

OK, this using a dog as a prop is giving me ideas ...is there a sultan's outfit in my Pomeranian's future? I just have to laugh because the thought reminds me of a "Beverly Hillbillies" episode where a stripper (I think her name was Chickadee) wanted Ellie May's raccoon as part of her act because it could untie her bows.

Hi Adiemus yes please come and see!!
For me i always hear things about veils buti dont realy care
I love it my audiance loves it ,and thats it realy
i never think is it realy autentick sure i spell that wrong LOL
When i cam to this country ,i was already performing with a veil
That time the Egyption dancers here told me o that is so oldfashion ...i said o well that sooth me fine because bellydancing is oldfashion to!!
So i did not realy care and did my thing
The story that i heard is like this King farouk of Egypt had always dancers coming to the palace and he invited some russian dancers aswell at the time to do ballet ...the Russian dancers used veils in their routine and he liked it...Than he asked the bellydancers if they could do a routine using veils aswell .I dont know if this is treu but this story go,s around
Than what i always repeatedly hear from foreigners ,,can you do the dance of the 7 veils?,, of course that is a complete differant story.....But for me ,,no,, i dont do that version LOL....
Perhaps i must make a video clip on basic veil and intermed veil and stick it in youtube so everybody can learn that? perhaps good idea o its not the 7 veil version LOL ...but i can tell you this everybody in my class loves veilwork, and i have students from all over the globe...Have a great day Lydia

I love veil and would be delighted to see your version of a veil dance, Lydia. It is the only prop I consistently use and is very typical of, yea even unto essential to, classic AmCab.

Yes, it is the most beautiful and sensuous prop for a belly dancer. I like it when veil movements complement the overall dance. I like it when is is a part of the dance and sometimes extesion of the dance. I love to spin with the veil, a series of them. But I don't like to see too much of it. I personally don't like when veil takes over the dancer and her dance.

...or when it looks like the dancer is using the veil to make a bed or signal a ship or chase away a swarm of no-see-ums...

Reason enough to make the veil a part of one's dance only if one can make it look good!

My teacher specializes in Egyptian styles and class usually ends with veil practice to music -- a nice way to cool down, and make sure we know how to use it without lookin' like ninnies!

I guess I'm leaning towards AmerCab, because I love veils and want to learn those intricate routines. Being a newbie, I'm still learning myself what is and isn't considered "authentic," because I don't want to offend anyone. However, at the same time, even though I do believe in following rules, I don't want to be constricted in the dance.

Lydia, one of the many reasons why I love you so well is because you follow your heart and do what you and your audience enjoys.
