I like the slower earthier movements that you might see in tribal fusion (think Rachel Brice) but I wouldn't want to be dressed in dark colors from head to toe all the time because I love color. I also like to watch those dancing Egyptian style. I'm still new to the dance and I don't want to limit myself by not exploring the other dance styles but so far I don't see myself as a Cabaret dancer. (or what I think a Cabaret dancer is) My focus is learning the basic movements because they are present in every style. |

I think, as a very newbie newbie of not even a year, that it's a great idea to focus on the music and movements basics first, because it takes ages to learn them! Initially I really thought tribal style was great, but now I'm much more comfortable watching the egyptian dancers - not sure exactly why (but then again, why do I like vanilla icecream and not chocolate icecream?!!)
I have watched heaps of YouTube clips - and it doesn't take long before I started to pick out what I liked of each dancer. BTW I love the costuming of both dances - but they are really different from each other!

![]() i really like to watch the egyptian style dancing but the tribal seems much more slower and calmer to me. I think its a better place to start for me. Hopefully with a bit of practice and experience i'll be able to do & feel more comfortable with the egyptian style...its my goal ![]()

I agree. Breaking it down to basic steps seems most logical in my very early stages. And hey, I like vanilla ice cream, but not chocolate as well - but I love chocolate candy - go figure ![]()

Another newbie piping in here. Initially, and in general, I find the cabaret styles very pretty, and I did not find the tribal styles all appealing. However, after finding beauty in the tribal style of dance and looking at tons of performances and photosof tribal dancer, I really do see the beauty in tribal coustming style.
I think one of the cool things about tribal is the varaitions (superficially esthetically speaking). There are the dark and kinda gothy styles, such as Zoe and Rachel Brice (fusion now, right? but both initially tribal, right?), and then there are the more Earth mama styles of Fat Chance Belly Dance. And then with fusion there are even more dynamic mixes of costume styling! Perhaps do a google image search on tribal bellydancing or check out tribes.com and look at some of the pictures there. You might be suprised how cute (and sometimes sparkly!) some of the tribal outfits are. I think as a newbies, we should all explore the different styles of BD to find what suits us and that through the music and the dancing decide what our focus will be and not think about the superficial like what costumes look the best. And, seems like with fusion we can pretty much brake the rules once we have a strong foundation and wear whatever we want! ![]() |
