Thanks. The first clip when she was acting out being a girl doing the laundry and carrying the container on her head along the road seemed like pure flirtation to me, though she kind of let fly at the end there, dancing on the truck, straight out teasing him "you want me but you can't have me."
The second was much more straightforward "I'm so hot" sex kitten thing to me, including multiple shots of her high heels. With the club ending in a free-for-all-brawl with her escaping. I wish I knew whether they were fighting over her. She is very good at it. It's not much to my taste though. To me it comes off as coy. Maybe this is partly because I'm a Westerner but I don't think that's the whole reason. Most American pop performers are not to my taste either (Madonna, Prince, etc.) They are all working it if you know what I mean. Thanks, Cathy |

Dala3 is the standard for an Arab woman. It's either that or looking like a whore...

Do you mean for all Arab women, all the time?! Or do you mean these are the two options for Arab women portraying themselves in performing raks sharki? Thanks, Cathy |

I just had to reply to this post title. Dala'a literally means spoiled.(Ness)
In many arabic cultures that idea that girls be spoiled is a desired trait. It's hard to explain if you are not from that culture. A girl who's spoiled is coquettish and flirty and cute. It has little to do with looks. Many arab songs have the theme of the guy looking for a spoiled girl. ( ya madala' inta, for example.) Literally means you spoiled one, you. Many dancers, especially egyptians dancers try to project this coquettish, flirty, girly image. Another thing, as Aisha said, Dala' is a verb. A girl would be dalou'a a young boy Dalou'. It would not be proper to have this quality in a grown man. Best, Summer |
