Hi all
![]() As drum solo is considered the cresendo of a bellydance performance, it would be interesting and informative to explore the differences of the styles observing drum solo's also. The first observation is that arabic and turkish dancers tend to be more relaxed and the drum solo (at least for good dancers) is improvisized, when on contratry the majority of western dancers (not specifying the style here) tend to choreograph to the last bit the drum solos. On the other hand Tribal drum solo's tend to be improvissional also. Also we can see the regional differences between countries, as some countries tend to adapt a style but change it a bit (example Russian Egyptian style dancers) So lets start I'll try to add as much as possible from different styles, and naming - numbering the video's will be easier for comments. Because couldnt find solid drum solo performances at some video's you have to wait till the end to see the drum solo (be patient lol) In general Western style: No 1 - Djamila Germany - choreographed No 2 - Sonia BDSS - USA - choreographed No 3 - Jillina BDSS - USA - choreographed Dancers from South America No 4 - Saida - Argentina No 5 - Carla Silvera - Brazil Tribal drum solos No 6 Rachel Brice No 7 JuditJ Russian dancers No 8 Primavera Group No 9 and amazing dancer Yasmin and shicshakshok + drum solo ρΣΝΙΞ :: χΙΔΕΟ ΞΑ RuTube No 10 Irina Popova Arabic style (but not native egypt dancers) No 11 Chryssanthi Sahar (Greece) No 12 Nour (Russia) No 13 Zeina (Sweden from workshop NileGroup) No 14 Zafirah (UK) No 15 Soraya (Brazil, working at Cairo) Egyptian Dancers A collective video first with Lucy and Aida Riad (happy to have studied with both) just to give the feeling of tabla solo for Egypt. (and thanks Gypsy for sharing) And grrrrrrrrr as for Egyptian dancers I have to look up at least for 2 hours to find video's with tabla lol Maybe Gypsy that have upload egyptian treasurs can help us here? Lebanese Dancers No 16 Amani Lebanon No 17 Aisha (Greece with Lebanese style) No 18 Yousra Hannem No 19 Jamila Al Masri No 20 Samara (Iraqi with Lebanese Style) Turkish style No 21 - Didem No 22 - Hale Sultan No 23 - Asena No 24 Tanyeli And male bellydancers Serkan Turkey Tito and his son Mimo (Egypt) Asi Askal Israel Alexandros Greece Jamil Australia? phew I got to go back to work lol I'll try to add more Maria Aya ![]() |

This is what I have learned from my egyptian drummer. He says drum solos and taxims are the improvisational dances. It is the pure expressions of the muscians and the dancers. I have always improvised drum solos with my drummer. I am telling you, it is not easy ![]() . But there is nothing like the free spirit and expression of an improvisation.I have seen clips of Egyptian dancers like Lucy, Dina, Mona (so called african drum solo) doing drum solos. My dear Maria, this thread is not compelete without Orit's drum solo clip. I lover her style. I think this clip of Suheir had bits of drum solo in it or is it a part of the baladi she is dancing to?? |

Oh, this was in my mind two months ago. I wrote some of my ideas in my blog. There is a great drum solo by Dina in Youtube, but I can't find it now. There you can really feel the Egyptian way.
Here is the blog Outi's blog Last edited by Outi; 07-27-2007 at 08:18 PM. |

Thanks Maria for the videos, but i have some corrections; no. 18 she isnt Yousra Hanem, if you look Yousra you`ll see they are diferent, and i dont think this is a drum solo, there`s no drummer, the music is taped.
Video # 19 she isnt Jamila al masri, but Gamar Kamel, and the drum solo comes to the final part. What do you think about vid # 15 costume? Soraya`s shimmies are pretty fast. |

Clip no 18 is Yousra Hanem. I don't know if you watched the clip completely or not, she does the drum solo in the last part of her routine. Also a drum solo doesn't have to have a drummer. It can be recorded one as well!!! You are right about the clip 19. It is Gamar Kamel!!! |

Oh, dear, just when I thought I'd zip onto the forum, check the costume section for double posts and trolls, and get off quickly...
Thanks tons for giving me something to do with my copious spare time this weekend, Maria! ![]() |
