Egyptian Debka- pls help!!!

Hi all,

I am in desperate need for help. I was asked to do a egyptian depka in a show next month. Many middle eastern countires have their own style of debka. I have learned a bit of lebanese debka. Even in lebanese, there are many variations. Do women do debka in egypt? Any help on music suggestions???

I just found this clip. How authentic is it???

Dear Janaki,
To my knowledge there is no Debke that is native to Egypt. It tends to be a Leventine dance. You may need to explain that to whoever is hiring you and tell them about various Beledi dances, Ghawazi,Saidi, other Egyptian folkloric dances. ( Even if they are Arab they might not know too much about dance.)

I'm with Aisha.
All these times traveling at Egypt and mainly for dance didnt ever saw dabke done on stage or from people.
The only time was at the last NileGroup where they hired lebanese Gabi Shiba to teach Dabke and to perform with his group also. (great instructor btw).

Just popping in to say the same thing as Maria and Aisha. Have never heard/seen an Egyptian debke. Syria, Jordan, Lebanon... yes.

They do dance dabke in Egypt. Just saw it yesterday. It's done in Sinai. I'm only familar with Lebanese style, so I can't say anything for sure. For me Egyptian version looked like Lebanese. Similar basic movemts, and rythms. I have only seen men dance, so I can't say anything about women.

Did they call it Debke? Interesting!!

They introduced it as the dance in the Sinai (and El Arish, as this was the name of the place). When I later talked about it and used the name dabke, they were really impressed that I had any knowledge about it. There was some people from Cairo, too, and they were familiar with the name dabke, too.

I don't have more information. When I'm not so busy, I can ask around a little more. I have had so busy two last months, I had no time to anything else. Hopefully this will continue until end of the season.
