I feel wierd lol And have seen Lucy live dancing to Alf Leyla wa Leyla and she was amazing. Have here to say also that Lucy is from the most moody dancers I've seen, if she is ok feeling good etc she is a miracle, if not she is bored and she shows it on stage also !! which is not so professional but anyway ty ![]() Maria Aya |

Being so new to BD, and learning to recognize the different styles all at the same time, I have surprised myself with a definite preference for American-style dancing....my clear favs here are Jillina and Aziza.
It's interesting to me to see, in my own life, a person's relationship to their culture and the products of that culture. Two months ago, I had no idea that BD had different forms. When I began to study the different styles (preparatory to choosing which to learn), I truly had no predisposition...if anything, I thought I'd like the Egyptian style (as being more "true" to BD roots). Consistently, however, I have chosen American (and even Tribal, a bit) videos over foreign. Clearly, I am as much a product of my culture as the BD shaped by this culture.By the way, Janaki, it was a fabulous idea to post different dancers' interpretations of the same music. It really helped me to identify the differences between the styles, and even to begin (only begin!) to understand the "flavor" inherent in each. Thanks!

Here is one more American interpretation - this time with Bozenka to dancing to live music by Egyptian band so also her style seems to have a bit more "Egyptianness" than clips of Jillina or Aziza. I still prefer Aziza, but I like this also as long as someone is not claiming it to be "real" Egyptian style...
And BTW please do not think that Didem represents here typical Turkish style as she does not. She does represent a style which is popular today amongs young Turkish dancers who IMO has got their strongest influences to their dance from Germany (nothing wrong with that as I love many German dancers but that kind of "Turkish feeling" you can still see with dancers like Birgül Beray and Sema Yildiz is missing) It would also be interesting to see some European interpretations of this music (especially Russian and German as their styles are also quite typical to their countries) |
