I have the same problem (though less strong than you) It can be very annoying, especially when people make remarks like "but you learn to tell left from right at primary school already" .

I can't look at a clock and tell the time proply. I just don't get it. It's odd. I don't have a watch or think about time much though anyway.

Don't worry about it you guys. At least you have an excuse for not typing accurately all the time. Looking back at mine I don't think I've spelt proply right...

Left and right are hopeless quandries for me. As long as I am home, I give directions in terms of north, south, east and west. Most people here know the mountain is south of town. Those that can't figure this out are experts in right-left, and I must admit I take a certain satisfaction in seeing them look blank when faced with compass directions. They think they're so smart not needing to look for their small pox vaccination to know which hand is their left. Heavens, what do younger people with no vaccinations do???

If I can think for a few seconds I usually got left and right right. Also it helps to remember with which hand I'm writing, lol.

We went terribly off-topic by the way

I found a clip of zombie-bellydance (ok they called it zombie-fusion, which is not bad, but it's tagged as bellydance)

Bellydance by the living death!

Zombie belly dance...

Anyway this directional/time telling thing is interesting - me too! I have to think twice telling people left and right AND telling the time. Though my spatial awareness and sense of direction is pretty good.

is it that being not sure about left and right is really common and people are too scared to admit it, or does left/right confusion lead to a predisposition to belly dance?!

Default Zombies, directional issues, dance, o my!!

Dear Group,
Could they not just go and be the undead someplace where it doesn't reflect badly on the dance???

I know I never had the problems before I had the TIA, but it seems like many of my fellow dancers suffer the same problem! I once read a study about how the direction people write affects their neurological wiring. At the time I was doing research to try to discover if people who write from right to left might have a different perception of the dance than people who write from left to right, as in writing Arabic as opposed to writing English. I was trying to see if this might have at least something to do with how the dance can be perceived so differently by the two different cultures in most cases. I did not learn much that pertains very directly to the dance, but the article did talk about perceptions of left and right. Perhaps hanging around with Arabs for 30 years has altered my perception??? Any excuse will do. I wish I could remember the article, but it was some 20 years ago and I do not seem to have it in my possession any more...???

Regards,
A'isha

Aniseteph, I think it's quite common. Now I'm studying at the university it's like I see more and more people with this problem. I tried as hard as I could not to do it wrong especially at primary school to avoid the "but you learned that already in first grade"-looks from teachers.
If it's more common on dancers, I don't know. I'm usually the only one who occasionally dances to the wrong direction in bellydance class
Maybe it's some very common weird brain connection. I also "suffer" from synesthaesia so I have more weird brain connections other people don't have

I like my synesthaesia. Didn't realize for years that other people didn't smell things in color or physically feel noises (which also come in color).

We did a dance last year with lots of repetitions but in different directions. As soon as we had to do it facing different walls we got in a right mess over which way to go .

Synesthaesia sounds fascinating.

This is a takeoff of the sensational zombie dance from the American TV show "So You Think You Can Dance". I think they did an excellent job.

I think the video was tagged bellydance, because it took place at a bellydance studio, that also welcomes non-bellydance performances at their haflas/shows. We've seen this studio before, ladies!
