This a very simple example so my point is that the womens must be a litle bit more open minded and to stop thinking that the art of bellydancing belong to them!!!

Dear Alexandros,
Much of the time when I enter into a discussion, I do not necessarily discuss my own point of view but tell it, instead what it is like from a cultural point of view. My own feelings about male dancers are that they are just as capable of performing belly dance as women, though some seem to think they have to macho it up, when in essence the dance has a feminine heart. It was developed originally by and for women to perform. That is the truth. However, my personal feelings are that men can and should dance, too, if the feel like it, as long as they respect what the dance is. ( Beledi is another matter all together!) Re assaya: There is no female Saidi version of cane dance in its original form, just as there is no male version of belly dance in its original form. However, both sexes have done the dances for ever. Both Beledi and Ghawazi (females) have their own versions of the dance in which females use canes or sticks. I have never seen a native male perform Shamadan, though this does not mean it's not done. I have also never seen a native male Ghaswazi dancer, though again that does not mean they don't exist.

I would venture to say that in regards to belly dance, it is males who need to remain open minded and not get the dance confused with a football game in which one must strut one's male stuff, so to speak. They must keep in mind that this dance springs from a feminine well, and not macho it into a whole other realm under the name of belly dance. I have seen this happen one too many times and I am never impressed by it.

BTW, I coached one of the very best male dancers ever, and I can say with great confidence that men do indeed make amazing belly dancers when and if they take the time to understand the nature of the dance.

Regards,
A'isha

Tito is elegant- perfectly elegant. How much classier can a guy's costume get than basic black and white?

I'm only aware of two male dancers who perform Shemadan, myself and Adam Basma - although I have NO doubt whatsoever that there are others that I haven't heard of. Would you consider Basma a "Native"?

It seems that Shemadan would be a natural for a male - the old stereotype: "Males will do ANYTHING if there's danger involved!" But most males won't touch Shemadan with a ten foot assayah. Even Horacio, who has a video on the subject, uses a candle tray when it comes time to perform.

A'isha and I have had some very interesting (!) discussions on the subject of male dancers - and have developed a healthy respect for each other even if we don't aways agree!

As not to bore everyone whose participated in these discussions in the past, I refer the curious to:

Dear Zorba,
I really do not think that Adam Bessma does things in a very Middle Eastern way at all. His stuff is very westernized, even his music.
Re statements about our discussions about males dancing: I respect you gobs because you argue with intelligence and do not call other people names or call their character into question. I find you to be one of the most respectful people on this forum as well as a person who puts thought provoking statements out there. I like you and hope we get to meet some day!!

With warmest regards,
A'isha

Thanx for your kind words... Maybe I'll do an Andalusian Skirt Dance for you when we meet...

As for Adam - I've never seen the man dance, so I cannot comment on his style, music, etc. I only know that he does Shemadan 'cause I've seen several pictures of him with one.

There's a photo of him performing solo here: http://www.planetegypt.co.uk/0603_summary/IMG_0748.jpg Unfortunately, I think the ceiling of this venue was too low for a full-sized candelabrum.

Cool! I'll add this link to my links page. Looks like an awesome Shemadan.

Low ceilings are always a problem with this prop, but even more so for most males as we tend to be taller. Maybe that's another reason why most males won't touch this prop.
