Default master list of styles??

I'm sure this gets asked a lot... but does anyone know of a master list of bellydance styles anywhere on the internet? I've taken plenty of beginner belly dance [although I couldn't begin to guess what style it was] and I want to pick out a specific type to study for performance. I'm most interested in Egyptian or Gypsy, but I don't know what else is out there.

Hi there Serena and welcome in our forum
Just in general so you can start searching at the Dance Styles subforum (this subforum) for info

Authentic originated styles:

Arabic style divided to the main Egyptian style with more than 20 different styles under it.
Each arab country have also their styles
Arab styles divited to folk-traditional, performance styles and social

Turkish style, as turkish Rom, old turkish and modern turkish (general terms)

Plus Greek Tsifteteli (not the rythmh the dance)

Invented, made-off styles:

AmCab the style that evolved at States mostly something like 50 years ago

Tribal - ATS not expert on this but you can search

Fusion styles, mixes from the above + the fantasy of each dancer/teacher (very risky style if someone doesnt know very well both styles, and also we have seen many tacky-stupit-kitsh things)

This is just a list to start

Good work

You are so right in the way you described egyptian style Maria!!!!

Hi Serena,

Different styles and most famous you can choose to study are;

1. Egyptian
2. Turkish
3. Lebanese (although this style looks like a fusion of other arab dances, but it has it own style and flavour)

American Tribal style(ATS), it not my cup of tea!!!!

Good luck!!!!

I wouldn't call AmCab invented...I'd call it an amalgamation of styles (seeing as it progressed from a non manufactured fusion (if those words make any sense at all))..

I've always been curious about Tribal styles, does anyone know more about this topic. I am from Miami and the street performers are so awesome, I love watching them, I've seen so many different types of dance, I cant even begin to recognize them all.

I know this is a vague question! buttttt, I guess im just looking for an answer about common traits, if any, between dance styles.

ThankS!!!

Oriental dance, the performance art, developed (primarily) in Egypt and to a lesser extent, Lebanon and Turkey. Each of those countries have their respective stylization of Oriental dance, all share the fundamental familes of movement, but express the movement differently, differences in music, costume, structure, and presentation. These are differences that might be a bit harder to discern 'just coming into it', but they are there. Outside the countries of origin, there is American Oriental (also called cabaret belly dance) which is a more or less a Pan Arabic and Turkish melding. Again sharing the same fundamental familes of movement, but a cross section of Arab, Turkish, American movement expression, music the same...
There are theater dance forms like American Tribal style, and (what most folks seem to be calling) Tribal fusion.

What do you mean by "Gypsy" dance? Like Turkish Rom? or?

Hi gals and guys! I am trying to sum up what I have learnt so far. I am aware that there are many opinions and many styles, and it is sometimes difficult to draw a clear line.... But for myself I try to sum up like the following.... (According what info on the net, classes and DVDs are available...)

1) Egyptian
2) Lebanese
3)Turkish
4)ME folkloric styles (?)
5)American Cabaret
6)American Tribal (group dance???)
7) Tribal Fusion (to middle eastern music ? A- la Rachel Brice?)
8) Tribal Fusion (to other types of music e.g Ariellah, Sera etc?)
9) Male dancing (does that go into Folkloric? I am sorry I know nothing about male dancing)
10) Other???

Can someone please please give your opinion on that list and maybe give some names of prominent dancers in particuar styles!
