Can any one tell me when (approx) drum solo's started and if you know who started them.

Seriously, the drum is one of the oldest musical instruments. West African dancers will dance invidually to one or more percussion instruments. The Zar is a "dance," sort of, often done to just percussion, and that pre-dates Islam in Egypt. It's a good bet that drummer and dancer duets go back farther, with connotations of ritual.

The modern "drum solo" is as least as old as the video record. I don't think you can pin down the originator of the modern performance art of drum solo.
