The thing that strikes me about tribal belts is that they can be never ending projects, with tassles and accoutrements added even after the original belt is put together, sort of like a fabric charm bracelet that you wear around your hips. There are some wonderful books on tassle-making out there, and you might like to keep adding to your creation as you learn new decorative skills. Creation is good for the soul, yes?

Dear Miss Shimmy, I have not made a tribal belt, but have made a ton of other stuff in my life with varying degrees of success. A friend of mne made a tribal belt that is an absolute work of art with hand-dyed silk and all sorts of tassels and pretties on it. I teach needlework for part of my living, and I encourage you to explore new techniques of embellishment as you go further with costuming. The best thing you can have you already have: a good sense of humor and the ability to listen to criticism, both good and bad, without going into freak-out mode.
