Default Correct Size of Veil

Girls, is there a fixed veil size? Or will it depend on how tall I am and how long my arms are?

I'm around 5'3 to 5'4 and 100pounds. I think I have long arms, just don't know the measurements.

Seriously thinking of having my first nice belly dance costume made here where impressive labor is much cheaper and I don't know the veil size (never used a veil) and I have yet to decide on the color of my costume (purple or turquoise or fuchsia or black with gold).

Unless a student is UNDER 5-foot, I always start them with a 3 yard veil.
I dance with both 3 and 4 yard veils and I am your height.

Gia, thank you so much! I don't know whether to have a 3 or 4 yard one. Is it possible to have a 3 1/2 yard one?

Sure...why not!
I think you'd be perfectly comfortable with 3 yards...many people, especially those new to veil dancing, find the 3 yard enough with which to contend...but you can always buy 3.5 yards of chiffon and cut it down if you feel it's 'too much'!

The "official" guide to veil sizes says to hold the veil across your shoulders, arms outstretched to the sides - flat out. The veil should just touch the floor. This doesn't work for extra wide fabric.

Now, all that said; go with what Gia said!

Choosing A Veil

I've always been told a variation of what Zorba said:

Get a long piece of material and stand with it hanging over your shoulders. Let your arms hang down by your sides.

Pin or make a mark on the material about 30cm (1 foot) past the tips of your fingers on each side.

Measure from pin to pin and that's the perfect length for your veil, especially if you're a beginner. Once you're more advanced you may like a longer one for more "waft".

I'll check the 3 yard one with my arms then. I have totally zero experience with veils so I need the smaller one!

Thank you guys
