Shanazel - Lady-of-Embrodery, Aisha - Wizard-of-costuming, and you all arty and crafty people....
Could anyone please direct me to a book on Applique??? I am not talking here quilt-like stuff, but wondering if there is anything on making those 3d-ish beaded, sequined thing-me-bobs that we so often behold on costumes and also can buy in fabric stores and online for next to a fortune??? I think I have seen some articles online on how to make them, but I think a book would be awesome! Thank you. reen.blom PS I wonder if I confused you completely??? I think I better find a picture of the stuff.... lol

Oooh, Lady of Embroidery? That's the nicest thing anyone has called me all day.
As a matter of fact, I have a book on making sequined and beaded appliques. I couldn't find it during a quick survey of my bookshelves (I recently rearranged my books and can't find a darn thing) but I will look better later and let you know the name and author of the book. Gotta go feed a horse right now . |

Oh wonderful Goddesses of Costuming Glory - I'm searching for advice on applique or beading onto stretch fabric (velvet). Do you make up an applique on non-stretch fabric and stitch it to the velvet or do you struggle with the velvet and hope that it doesn't stretch out of shape???

*Green with envy*-- give him extra carrot from me!!!! Oh please please find it? I am so excited! Adiemus, good luck with your project! I was also wondering in general about stritched directly on fabric VS separatly made ones? ( especially with a threat of stretching)? Thank you!!!

Thanks Reen - I've been trying to design something that looks nice on me, elegant and a bit restrained, and is black and gold - yummy colours!! show and tell time coming up!!
![]() ![]() I drew the design onto a photographed outline (yes I doooo have short legs and wide hips!! I think we can safely call it an 'hourglass' figure!) so I hope I can make it and pull it off OK!!

Beads, sequins and crystals with gold embroidery... I think I'll put a short train on it as well, but I'm scared of tripping over it!! I'm planning a veil dance so I will also have a veil in the accent colour which is what I'm still working on! Possibly red? what do you think?
Anyway, applique it is - and I'm scanning the internet for applique 'how to' sites, so when/if I find some I'll post them here.

The normal way of beading on lycra costumes stretches pretty well. My lycra skirt has loads of glass beads and I'm pretty wide at the moment and it can stretch to fit me.
It's like this: up through the fabric, one sequin, 4-8 glass beads, one sequin and then down through the fabric. Needle up again right between the two sequins from the last stitch and do the sequin-beads-sequin again, and again and again. Very simple and pretty easy to control after some practice and planning. You can probably see it on any egyptian costume.

Oh yes of course dear, here are some detail-pics. Hope they help. These are from gauntlets I made to my costume. The cossie's beading is a liiiittle bit nicer because the sequins are smaller. I could not find the exact match though. I think it worked out quite well and actually went faster than I had imagined. Good luck with it.
Adiemus: Nice design there!
