Hi Lydia,

I was replying to Midoria's post, she said she bought sheila and abaya sets in Saudi arabia for $15, which is around 55 riyals or dirhams. You know the ones that are sold in shopping malls they cost a fortune, and some of them are very simple not even worth the money.

As for the purple dress/tobe, I know that not everyone can afford an expensive one, but some people here are paying $95 and they say this is cheapest price they can get, for that quality I think they can definitely get something better.

Arab women have magic skills when it comes to bargaining, even the khaleegi women that are rich if you notice they bargain too! I think it's like an old tradition or something, because I don't know how to do it, but my mom is an expert LOL. BTW many sellers are adopting this new technique... they double the prices, so after all the bargaining it goes back to original selling price , this way they still make profit.

I love this.....Singer Areeb, I love her dress it's so beautiful

Dear Lydia,
I have been asking for 25 years what the literal meaning of these words are. I know they call the dance Raqs Neshat ( which woud imply more than one "nesh", I think), and also that the dress is sometimes called Thobe Neshel, but I have only ever heard one Saudi give me a meaning and he is often a liar so I am not sure whether to believe him. Everyone else, including all the people from the Gulf that I have met, says they do not know the literal meaning, only that it implies the dance and the dress. Do you know the meaning, perchance?
Regards,
A'isha

Dear A,isha ...this is what it is exacly....the dance called ,,nash,, or sounds like ,,nesh,, the tob is ,,neshel,, ....than the lady,s that perform this dance called.,,,the na,ashaat,, then if its only 1 girl she is called ,,na,asha......so perhaps this is helping you to understand...the dance is called like that because its always done with this tobe, called neshel...now you know that those words are used in the uae and not for example in Saoudy have a nice day ,Lydia

Dear Lydia,
Thank you. I do understand all that, but what does the word "Nesh" mean? The dress is called many things besides Thobe Neshel. For example, Thobe Tawoose means "Peacock dress", or Darrah Zerri, which means Sequined Dress, and both are names for the thobe. But this word, "Nesh", no one seems to know its literal meaning and I have been trying to find it for many years. I so appreciate your input and thank you for taking the time.
Regards,
A'isha

Yes, I'm aware of that. But I'll leave the pure silk, hand painted, and designer abayas to the women who can afford them and wear them everyday.

Dear Lydia,
Thank you so much for taking the time to ask your friend. It sounds like a reasonable explanation and I will add it in the next time someone asks me about it, and I will credit you with giving me the information. I hope that all is well with you.
Regards,
A'isha
