Dear Midoria,
You can make practice thobes easily and cheaply. Adiemus has mentioned a pattern and I also have one produced by Vicki Horiuchi, along with info about the thobe, that I sell when I teach classes in Gulf dance. You do not even need the ones with all the embroidery to be dressed authentically as some of them are just very plain. The thobe is not actually necessary at all and most of the women that I know who are from the Gulf and Saudi Arabia do not use one, though someone occasionally does. My dance company often uses them on stage because they are so pretty. You can also do the dance with just a scarf, or a half thobe, or just whatever you are wearing. Baharat!!, my company does a thing we call Khaliji Suite, in which we present several different versions of the dance, including one where the ladies just wear evening clothes. I want to incorporate half thobes into it eventually when I get the time to make some up. There are two articles on my website that have to do with the dance if you are interested. Raqs Azar. They are called Are we confused yet? and Observations on Samri Regards, A'isha |

I think I'm just going to get a large veil and call it a day. The instructor said we could use them, but I wanted a thobe to get the full feel of it. However, money and time are too tight to buy one or make my own. Thanks ladies for all your help! Last edited by Midoria; 05-23-2008 at 10:31 PM. |

Hi Sweety,s the dress in the picture ,is the khaleegydress that is sold in the gulf for tourists and yes like maria said, very cheap...at the moment i think 110 uae dirham ...is like around 32 euro or 28 dollars i think (100 us dollars makes 365 uae dirham),keep in mind that this is used for tourist not realy for proff dancing in the gulf,...but many many dancers outside the middle east are using them for work...i think i have mentioned it before in another mail..i will be happy to send you one or a few if you need them for class,i just get them here from the market BDW many vendors in Cairo get them here from the market....and i think i have send by now a few hunderd to all corners of the world LOL and they come in many colors,so if you think you want some, you can send me a email i am happy to go shopping for you have agreat day Lydia

Midoria,
Some abayas are cheap, it depends where you get them. However, inside the shopping malls and at designer boutiques they can cost thousands. I think it's too much that is charged for the dress mentioned above, but it's meant to be for tourists, so go figure. I would put another hundred or two on top of that and get a better quality hand-made piece instead of buying a cookie cutter design that is travelling around the globe. |

Dear Gypsy, yes you are correct some tobe,s are very expensive the proffesional ones start around 500 dirham till perhaps 10.000 or even more...but not everybody can afford a dress like that...so then the cheap ones come realy handy...now the tob that i am refering to, is the purple colored one in the picture in the post early in this thread...also it is not called ,,abaja,, its called ,,neshell,, that is where the name ,,nash,, comes from the traditional uae dance for ladys...the tob is specialy used for dancing and not like a abaya to cover the normal day to day clothing...have a nice day Lydia
