My inspiration often comes from colours I want to put together - and feeling the fabric. I also spend hours combing through the net looking at good examples of costuming often from Flickr or other photo sites - then I start with a basic outline of something, combining what I've seen - and then I start making them, and that's where the fun begins. Because try as I might, I never seem to make the end product look anything like the original intention. Which is fine because I think this is part of the creative process and means I can never be accused of doing rip-offs of someone else's work!
Can you tell I love designing and making?!

Very Very Nice Maria!!!!
As far as my personal inspitation for costumes, I do pretty much the same things ever one else has already posted. I see something I like and I change it an put my own spin on it. Then I tell MAZ my idea, she puts her spin on the costume. I just love taking my ideas to a person who is good at their craft, and allow them to put their "spin" on it. I not only get what I want it always comes out better than what I pictured it to be. Then it really becomes "My Own"

I love that one! Funny you should post it here, as it's one of my inspirations for something I'm making now. Only it will be a lot simpler - can't do the spectacular bra for a start .

@gypsyroze: I LOVE Padme Amidala's costumes! They have been a huge inspiration for me, too

I have only made one costume and my “inspiration” came from the floral henna patterns that Arab women paint on their hands and feet.

However, as I am very inexperienced in sewing and embroidery, the final result was not exactly what I had envisioned…

Still I am wearing my costume in our next hafla, not because I don’t have something nicer to wear (because I do!), but because it is my creation. Imperfect as it is, it is mine!

Thank you Shanazel for your kind words!

This is the costume I made myself (pink one). I wore it at our hafla on Friday.

The lovely girl next to me is my sister! She is the one that got me into belly dancing. I bought her the blue costume from Cairo, as her birthday present!
