Ladies I need advice.
I am busy crocheting a hip scarf - the beaded triangles (I do hope i will be able to buy more of the same beads...LOL) Ad now I am looking for fabric to set them on. I do not want to waste all that hard work by using wrong fabric! I think the easiest would be to buy a scarf and stitch the triangles on.... Anyhow what do you prefer? Thin fabric or velvet? Or? Also was wondering if anyone can give me advice on the beady teadrp thingies thet use instead of coins.... Are they crocheted too or stitched on? Have to get around that somehow! Thank you! reen.blom *hug*

Not the heavy velvet if you are going to tie it!
Thoughts from my hipscarf basket... - Stretch velour type velvet: OK, not too bulky to tie, clings for a nice fit, but might slip down if the decoration is anything but very lightweight. Had to reinforce mine with non-stretch ribbon. - Big squares that fold on the diagonal: can also slip cos they can stretch out along the side that's going round you. - Keep beading/decoration out of the bit you'll need to tie unless you don't mind when the beads/crochet get damaged. - The medium weight chiffon that a lot of Egyptian ones are made of can carry a LOT of coins, beads etc, and if cut on the straight grain of the fabric they don't stretch out. My favourite hipscarf for class is one I made from a velvety scarf - rectangular so it doesn't stretch and slip off, hooks so I'm not fiddling with the knot all the time, beads and coins sewn on with strong thread so no shedding issues. ![]() I've got one with those teardrop beads - it's got round ones and teardrops then a coin on the end. I'm not a crochet expert, but the only way I think you could incorporate it into crochet would be to pre-thread as many of the dangling sequences (through beads, end coin, then back up through the beads) as you need, and crochet them in as you need them. Fiddly or what?! |

Tomorrow I wil try to get to a fabric shop to see what I can get.... I do like stretch velvet.... just not sure how to trip the edges, sounds like it might be tricky with stretchy fabric.... Should it stretch in width? I am much better with embroidery and crochet than sewing....Hmmm will definitly have to reinforce it as the glassy-type seed beads I am using make the triangles quite heavy even without the trimming! As for teadrop beads I think my explanation is a bit fuzzy.... ehem... I did not mean the one with coins but the one like in the pic- the lanvender dangly thingies.... ehem....LOL Thank you for encouragenment! ![]()

Those are loops of beads...I have a scarf like this...very pretty...very heavy!
As far as I know, stretch velvet has more stretch in length than width, so you won't have to worry about too much 'give' that way. I've always hemmed using a rolled hem on stretch... Gia |

Oh I see - I've got a couple with those loopy dangles - they are crocheted in. Same as crocheting beads into the fishnet-type bits, but bring enough beads along the thread to form the loop then crochet back into the bit it's going to dangle off (closing the loop), and repeat for as many dangles as required. Expect you can do it on autopilot after enough practice, but horribly fiddly with those beads IMO. I salute your crocheting skills!
I only know they are done like that because of what happens when a bead cuts through a thread. - sewed dangles wouldn't unravel so disastrously ![]() Just saw the pics - looks right to me! ![]() Last edited by Aniseteph; 02-05-2008 at 09:57 PM. Reason: PS |

On my hip scarf, it looks like the fabric is pinched in a tiny pleat, and the crochet thread goes through both layers of fabric. I'm not sure how they do that...maybe you could experiment with scraps, first? |

Oh I see what you mean by pinched fabric, I think I have seen it in the pictures.... Now that I think of it... I have never seen a hipscarf 'live' lol
Bought enough beads to finish the triangles, but surely not enough to make fringe... I can buy smaller beads at quater of the price, so I think I will try makin the fringe of smaller ones.... big ones just look better... :-S
