Hi,
I was wondering what everyone thought of 'fusion' costumes, or costumes that are supposed to tell the story of the song you are dancing to (like my AC/DC one, for instance). I kind of like them; it's different than the usual bra and belt! Here is one I like: Dahlal Internationale

Oh no! OK well if you are interested, go to the Oriental Originals tab and click on the last page, then go back one. It's the one that looks Spanish.
I do like 'themed' costumes myself.

I wish I could buy the Bar Wench costume!! I always look awesome in that kind of thing; I should have been living in the Scottish Highlands a couple centuries ago, the laddies would have LOVED me...unfortunately there is no time machine to go back to the time that your 'type' was thought most beautiful, and also no way to get the zillion dollars a Dahlal costume costs.

Dear Gang,
I am way in favor of moving away from costumes that overly reflect belly dance when doing fusion pieces. I do Zourouni with Georges Lammam and Ancient Future with two veils and an evening gown type dress. We often do Shaabi and Arab pop stuff in street clothing. I think it is entirely appropriate to costume for the actual music. I would love to design a couple of Goth costumes so that they do not reflect so much on belly dance, but enhance the things that make it Goth. My dance company does this thing we call "Fusion Spoof"" in which we hardly ever even wear belly dance costumes at all, but pick certain things out of the music that are distinctly Hindi, or western (as in a cowboy twang) or very American pop, and we play it up big. It is a silly dance and lots of fun. It is not belly dance.... and I guess some people would even say it is not art!! We are very careful to explain after the dance what just happened on the stage. We announce it in the tried and true Monty Python manner, "And now for something completely different." Regards, A'isha |

Oh that would be cute!!! Too bad you don't have clips!
I like comedy/light pieces when they're done with good dancing. It is a nice break in a show, and a chance for light-heartedness. A'isha -- I'm curious about how you would costume a Goth piece!! I'd love to see something different from the typical Black Corset Belt With Gauntlets. (yawn). Something I'd love to see would be a costume for an interpretive piece that focused on TONS of fabric, draped in unique ways. Like, where you could use part of your costume as an attached veil, and use it to selectively hide/cover parts of your body. I have a vision in my head for this Goth piece I'd LOVE to do, but don't have any idea how to realize it in actual fabric. |

Dear Aziyade, I would like to see something in gun metal and maroon, to begin with for a Goth look. From there its better to hear the music, meet the dancer, etc. I have designed and built a costume where the skirt and veil are the same piece of fabric. It was for a Jeel number that had very strong Nubian overtones. Mark Balahadia got a huge kick out of the costumes. I did have to refurbish them last year since I had made them about 10 years ago and could not find all the small parts, etc. They are pretty fun on stage. Regards, A'isha |
