I've seen net in the swimsuit area of Hancocks, but it is nothing like powernet. If you are just naturally built well and only want concealment, the lighter net would probably work perfectly, but my mid-section requires the fabric equivalent of chain mail. Powernet is incredibly resilient- the first time I put on a bodystocking, I was amazed at how good my body suddenly shaped up to be. I have seen both types of net advertised in a whole array of colors in Threads magazine and similar sewing-oriented periodicals.

I just bought 2 midriff covers from Unicorn belly dance supplies Belly Dance Supplies, Bellydancing, Costumes for Belly Dancing, and Belly Dance Music
They are made by Danskin, and are a fishnet weave but a small weave. Quite stretchy, and one style is seamless which was what i was after, you need to put hooks on the top though to attach under the edge of the bra. I also have one of the ebay ones from Eralla in Australia, that is OK as well. |

I have a body stocking by Sugarpetals and one by designs by Janie. The construction of the Sugarpetals stocking is much better, it's cut lower on the leg, it's longer in the torso and is stronger.
I'm not tall, only 5'4. Wearing costumes above the hip really kind of cuts you in half, making you look shorter and fluffier. Tall, lanky gals can look good with costuming up to the naval but I think shorter gals need all the length we can get. I'd opt for a stocking over wearing the costuming high. |

But if I wear my costume below my navel, my scar would look like "butt cleavage," only in front of my body. Will the body stocking hide that? I know that simply wearing a one-piece outfit would solve the problem. I'll eventually buy some dresses, but I love the two-piece, glitzy cabaret costumes, and I've seen lots of tops online with fringe that hides some of the belly area. Yeah, I know, I have deep, psychological issues with my scar. *sigh* ![]() |

There are some one piece costumes that are almost like two piece bedlahs, only connected withe a stripe in the front. Like this:
Pro Belly dance Bellydance costume - eBay (item 180206994621 end time Jan-17-08 21:50:23 PST) I'll put in a thumbnail as well as I think the auction is about to end. This model for dress might work for you. There are other way more glitzy ones if you prefer. ![]()

Dear Gang,
I make my own body stockings. It's way cheaper and takes only minutes. I bought a length of powernet, I think about 5 yards ( it's 60 inches wide) from, if I remember correctly, Chandra's. You can make patterns for either the kind with the seams on the side or cut a pair of undies open and turn sideways to create a pattern for a net with one seam up the back. You do have to "custom cut" the front of the leg opening. Add some lingerie elastic at the legs and voila!! The whole process takes far less than half an hour. Regards, A'isha |

Ooh, thanks A'isha, I'm going to have a go at that!
![]() I was going to buy one but I'm never quite sure about the fit, being tallish and not thin. (Visions of the sort of thing that happens when tights aka pantyhose are not big enough, only with sub-bra gape instead of low slung gusset issues. Eurghh, not pretty). |

Wow, thank you for all your help, ladies.
I'm glad there are so many options out there to choose from, and that I'm not so limited as to what I can wear. This makes me feel a whole lot better. Negetive body image is so hard to overcome; it's really been an uphill battle for me. I know happiness starts from inside and being comfortable and accepting of who you are, but head knowledge and heart knowledge can often be at odds with one another. Thank you all again for your advice and patience with me; sometimes I worry that maybe I whine a little too much about being able to accept myself physically. You all are so wonderful. *hugs* I'll post a pic in my new costume later today in another thread; right now, I'm still in my 'jammies and ugly bath robe. ![]() |
